C Wednesday, Apr. 20, I960 Northwest Log Trains Continue To 'Do the Job' Portland, Ore. - (UPD - The Northwest's old-time logging trains refuse to be relegated to the junk piles of history. "Don't bury the log train, young fella," admonished the veteran railroader. "It Isn't dead yet." And he's right! The loaded log trains, wrig gling like giant caterpillars on gleaming rails, are still doing the job of the "long haul" for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. in the woods of Washington and Oregon. Some of the railroaders who run these trains have been at their jobs for three dec ades. Ray Essena, engineer of the "481" out of Vail deep In Washington's southwest forest lands, and Otto Stolp, fire man, are the last of the ori ginal crews which hauled the first logs out to South Bay on Puget Sound some 30 years ago. Veterans With Company Essena has been on a com pany train crew since 1023. And Dennis Kell, "481" con ductor, has worked for the company for more than 29 years. Part of the tradition of these old-time railroaders is the special language they de veloped and used. The engineer Is known as a "hogger." The fireman Is a "tallow pot." Brakemen are called "pin heads." The switchman is known as a "snake." The flagman is a "parlog boy," and the conduc tor is referred to as the "con" or "skipper." Miles of track have been torn up in recent years as log trucks have taken over much of the hauling in the woods. Federal Jobs in weather re search, physics, soil science research, entomology, statis tics, genetics, chemistry, met allurgy and even ocean ography and archaeology are all open to college students; many o these are also open to high school students. Ask for Information 1. Write to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, Wash ington 25, D.C., and ask for pamphlet 45, "Summer Em ployment in Federal Agen cies," and for information on the student trainee program under which most scientific jobs fall. At the same time, ask for a student trainee application blank. Students who apply by April 15 will be tested (for three hours) on May 3. 2. Check with state employ ment offices and directly with state hospitals, laboratories and research units. 3. Write to the Association of Private Camps Inc., 55 West 42nd St., New York 36, N.Y., and ask about natural ist, geological and other science-related jobs in private camps. 4. Look over your local in dustries, colleges, hospitals and museums. Museums of natural history may be able to offer field work, maybe mapping area caves. Good Experience Campus research founda tions may set students to work washing test tubes and feeding mice, but even mac is good experience for learn ing the ins ana outs oi sci ence. As tor hospital work. aide and laboratory work is not necessarily restricted to pre-med students. And here are some oti-neav science-related jobs that will be hard to get but worth the trouble: 1. Roughnecklng, which in volves building rigs for oil- drilling. 2. Being guinea pig lor psy chological tests at universi ties and foundations. 3. Mining, which may in clude engineering, metallurgy and geology. Some mining jobs are available in Alaska. The presumably non - pcntosurlc relatives, who Inherited the gene from only cm: parem, had a hidden and extremely mild pentosuria.
