Jacobson, district manager of the Medford office of the social security administration. "There seem to be two com mon misunderstandings re garding these payments," Jacobson stated. "One is that they may be received by a person who is temporarily disabled; the oth er is that they may be re ceived only by someone who is completely incapacitated." Requirements Explained Actually, he explained, the requirements are that the dis ability has existed for at least s i x months, prevents the worker from performing "any substantial gainful activity," and is expected to be of long continued and indefinite dura tion. In addition, the disabled person must have worked un der social security for at least five years out of the 10 years immediately before he became disabled. There can be no hard and fast rule as to who will qual ify under these stipulations, Jacobson explained. After the basic six months require ment has been met, each case must be judged on its merits, based on the best medical evidence available. He urged anyone having questions regarding the dis ability insurance program to contact the nearest social se curity office. Applications may be filed and medical evi dence submitted as much as two months before the end of the six month waiting pe riod, he added. The Medford office is lo cated at 1005 East Main st. and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
