Walker Appointed Representative Clark J. Walker, Medford Realty board member, has been appointed local repre sentative of the National In stitute of Real Estate Brok ers, the headquarters office in Chicago, 111., has an nounced. One of Walker's duties will be to stimulate panel discus sions on brokerage at real estate board meetings and during state conventions. The Institute, composed of more than 13,000 realtors, is the largest affiliate of the Na tional Association of Real Es tate Boards and has as its main objective the education of its members to better serve the public. Forms tor Contest Available in Medford Entry forms for Western Auto company's San Juan Family Vacation contest are now available at the local store, 25 South Riverside ave., Medford, Donald K. Ford, manager, has announced. Winner of the contest will receive a free vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and other prizes include deluxe cabinet style barbecue grills, transist of portable radios, and irons. Prizes are on display at the store, Ford said. Palm Beach, Fla.- (UPD -Lester N. Stockard, 67, pres ident and controlling stock holder of the Stockard Steam ship Corp., of New York and New Orleans, died here Thursday. Gary Cooper Well After Surgery Boston - CUPB -Actor Gary Cooper was reported doing well Thursday night at Massa chusetts General Hospital fol lowing removal of his prostate gland. Cooper, 58, was admitted to the hospital Tuesday. General director of the hospital Dr. Dean A. Clark said the sur gery was necessary because of an enlarged prostate condi tion. The condition was similar to that of Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur who underwent a similar operation last month in New York. Gregg Orr Nominated For Jayeee Position Gregg Orr was nominated for first vice president of the Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce at a meeting last week. His was the only nomi nation received. John Linn, Medford, for mer jet pilot, discussed the causes of sonic booms, noting that several have been heard in this area recently. Portland - fUPD - State Sen. Monroe Sweetland (D-Mil-waukie) has announced that C. Girard Davidson, Demo cratic national committeeman, nnd State ReD. Al Fleeel of Roseburg would be co-chair man of his campaign commit tee in his bid for secretary of state. Trial of Ashland Men Rescheduled The trial of three Ashland men charged with assault and battery Involving a Southern College student was set over for May 10 to await a jury trial in district court, it was reported Friday. The three, Eugene Levon Rashe, 20, 1995 Vine St.; El- den Eugene Fagan, 20, 159 Wightman St., and Joe Rob erts, 21, 129 Granite st., have been released on bail pending trial. The trio is charged with asault and battery of John Herman Heitsmith, SOC stu dent, Feb. 6. Roundtable Speaker For Monday Noted The speaker at Monday's Medford Chamber of Com merce roundtable luncheon will be retired Army Col. Boyd Yaden. Yaden Is a consultant for the General Electric company, and will speak on the idea of using electronic computers in city planning. A version of this idea is used In Reno, Nev., and Phoenix, it has been pointed out. Anyone may attend the luncheon starting at noon in the Jackson hotel. ANIMALS OUTNUMBERED New York-a'PD-Cattle, sheep and hogs, taken together, are almost as numerous as men, according to a Twentieth Cen tury Fund report. Strong Bidding Noted in Sale of Bureau Timber Strong bidding was noted in the three tracts of timber of fered for oral auction sale by the Medford office of the bureau of land management April 14, according to Ross Youngblood, distriot manager. The three tracts, which con tained a total of 16,633,000 board feet were sold for a total of $632,475.20. Two of the tracts are located In Douglas county and the other Is in Jackson county. . The first tract was pur- . chased by Bate Lumber com pany of Merlin for $205, 004.50. The tract, which i located on upper Grave creek In northwest Jackson county, contained 5,308,000 board feet. The high bid Included an offer of $40 per thousand board feet for the Douglas fir. The Robert Dollar company ' of Glendale paid $41 per thou- ' sand board feet for the Doug las fir and a total of $315 - 250.85 for a tract containing . 7,706,000 board feet on the Mt. Reuben-Eden Valley road in Douglas county. . The last tract, which con tained 3,619.000 board feet . was purchased by Rogue For ' Mt Products of Rogue River. The bid of $112,219.85 for the tract and $35.05 per thousand board feet for the Douglas fir was the highest offer receiv ed. The tract Is located near Dutchman butte In Douglas county. Sales In the near future planned by the Medford dis trict of the bureau include a sale of three small salvage tracts April 28 and one of ' four green sales May 12. The rtalvage sale contain 198,000 board feet appraised at $4, B02.40. Two of these are lo cated in Jackson county and one is Josephine county. x The four tracts In the May 12 sale, all of which are in Jackson county, contain 14, 672,000 board feet appraised at $316,042.90. Public Meetings Set on Budget Three more public meetings are scheduled this week in the Medford school district at which the proposed budget for next school year will be dis cussed. The meetings, which start ed earlier this month, are be ing sponsored by Parent Teacher associations and Mothers' clubs, but officials of those organizations pointed out that the meetings are open to anyone interested in dis cussing the proposed budget. One meeting is scheduled at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Ruch school. Dr. Leonard a. Mayfield, superintendent, and Frank Bash and Keith Hock ersmith, board members, plan to attend to answer questions. Meetings are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Washington and Oak Grove schools. Russ Acheson, assis tant superintendent, and Wil liam (Bill) Barker, chairman of the school board, are sched uled to attend the Washington meeting, and Dr. Mayfield and Otto Ewaldsen, board mem ber, are scheduled to attend the Oak Grove meeting. An election on the proposed $4,409,756.48 total budget for next fiscal year will Be neia in the district May 2. Campaign Kickoff For Local Cancer Unit Is Scheduled IT TAKES ALL KINDS St. Cloud, Minn. (UNI St. Cloud State College took survey and found that more than half its 2.898 students help finance their education with part-time work. The jobs include cake decorator, fish ing guide, tutor for blind stu dent, dancing instructor, char ter plane pilot (a 20-year-old girl), policeman, beautician, crop duster, deep sea diver, preacher, farmer, school bus driver and organist. David Ru precht, Eden Valley, Minn., works as a part-time piano tuner. He's totally blind. Bids to Be Opened On Highway Jobs Salem - Bids for resurfac ing 4.53 miles of the Ashland Neil Creek rd. section of the Green Springs highway will be received in Salem Tuesday, April 19, by the Oregon state highway commission. Plans call for resurfacing the existing roadway with Wi Inches of asphaltic concrete to a 22 foot width flanked with stone shoulders of varied width. The project is sched uled for completion by the middle of August, 1960. An additional project calls for the construction of four reinforced concrete structures consisting of three under crossings over the new Pa cific highway at Seven Oaks Interchange, Upton rd. cross ing and Central Point inter change; and a bridge over Bear Creek to provide an Improved stream crossing for Upton rd. Site of the project is about 2 to 8 miles northwesterly of Medford. Since detours are provided under the structure sites, there will be little In terference with traffic. The project is scheduled for com pletion by spring, 1961. Chicago - (UPI) - Walter P. Paepke, 63, art patron and board chairman of the Con tainer Corp. of America, world's largest container manufacturer, died Wednesday. A kickoff and semi-annual meeting will be held Tuesday, April 19, by the Jackson county unit of the American Cancer Society, The local unit is sponsor ing the luncheon at the Med ford hotel for all Crusade workers, especially the house to house canvassers. The luncheon's guest speak er will be Joseph Urban, re gional director in charge of 15 western states for the American Cancer Society. Dr. Earl Lawson, Medford, is scheduled to give an illus trated speech entitled "X-Ray in Diagnosis of Cancer. Kickoff chairman is Dr. Orval Eaton. Those who plan to attend the luncheon are asked to make reservations with the district chairmen or at the office by calling SPring 3- 5858. All reservations should be In no later than Monday, April 18. Over 1,200 volunteers will make the rounds on "C" day which has been set for May 3. Mrs. Fred Coleman, Medford and Mrs. B. D. Mitchell head a group of 35 women golfers who have volunteered to make ready the kits which will be used during the C day drive.
