Most of them are happy, too. Alarmed by this trend, the Legislative Interim Commit tee on Education asked the University of Oregon's Bureau of Educational Research to find out why. All were queried, 49 per cent replied and most said it was better pay that made them move. Haasons Brokan Down Tha Goldhammer group broke down the reasons into three sections; Economic, per sonal and professional. Of the 339, 190 moved to California and 169 to Wash ington. Higher pay was Cali fornia's biggest lure while the chief reason for moving to Washington was because their spouses were transferred or got work there. More money also was a factor in the Ever green state. The average salary Increase of those moving to California was $977 a year and In Wash ington $617. Some Samples The unsatisfied teachers were asked why they moved. Some samples: "There is a closer relation ship between administrators and teaching staff." ". , . Teachers have stand ing in the community (in the new locale) ..." . "Less interferences with teachers by school boards, principals, and parents, more attention to discipline . . . few useless meetings, no lesson plans required." One irate teacher wrote: "Some young veterans from World War II holding public relations Jobs in the name of principals are a menace to Oregon." Recurring Theme The recurring theme in moving for professional rea sons was better opportunity for advancement in larger school systems In more popu lous areas, and a lighter load. Along with higher salaries, other economic drawing cards for California and Washing ton Included better state sup port of schools, a better state retirement system and a more liberal system of fringe bene fits. One teacher took a job in California paying $2,000 a year over her Oregon salary. "Should the state of Ore gon ever find It possible to keep pace salary wise with states such as California and Washington," one instructor replied, "and to meet the ex cellency of its curriculum, I'm very sure you will have no difficulty attracting the best of the teaching profes sion." Expects to Return A few found the new pas tures not so green after all. One wrote, that "the disad vantages are such, In my case, that we expect to return to Oregon.
