Black Tornado's Thinclads Cop Crown in Rogue Relays "It looka just like old times." That was an appropri ate comment voiced yester day as Medford High school was on its way to victory in the annual Rogue Valley re lays at the Medford stadium. . Black Tornado trackmen ended the two-year reign of Grants Pass in the relays in convincing fashion and liven . ed hopes for further upsurge in Medford cinderpath and field fortunes. They won eight of the 13 events, set one new record and tied another and ran up a, tremendous 100V4 points. , Grants Pass was a distant second with 75 'a and was pressed for the No, 2 spot by Crater which took third with 71 V4. Klamath Falls scored 50 and Ashland 30V4. Mike Hood, Phil Hum phreys and Dan Sieg combin ed for the day's only record ahatterlng effort. They aggre gated 62 feet 9V4 inches, bet tering by one foot the mark ' set by a 1956 Medford trio, Jerry Close; Mike Hawkins and Bob Tisdel. Hood leaped 21 feet 7 Inches, Humphrey's 21 feet and Dan Sieg 20-2 Vz. A Tornado quartet of Hum phreys, Kent Blew, Terry Ryan and Len Griggs tied the 880-yard relay mark of 1:31.5. Other Tornado triumphs were in the high hurdles, the 440-yard relay, the two-mile relay, the shot put relay, the shuttle hurdles and the high jump relay. Klamath Falls won three events, the javelin, discus and distance medley and Grants Pass took two con tests, the pole vault and mile relay. While Crater gained no . firsts, it scored strongly with six seconds and two thirds. Hood Wins Hurdles Hood captured the high hurdle race. His time of :15.3 actually put another record on the books for Medford since it was the first Rogue running of this race. Walt Ayres, also of Medford, was second, Mike McCullough, Humphreys, Jim Schmidt and Griggs teamed for Medford In the 440 win and a slick ex change between Humphreys and Schmidt made the differ ence in the race. The :44.4 time was .1 second off the record. In the two-mile Bob Rlx ran the fastest leg for Medford of 2:04 to gain back distance lost. Ray Smith, an choring in 2:05.9, took the lead on the west lap and beat off a stretch challenge by Ken Marshall of Grants Pass. Medford, with Griggs on the final leg, won the 880 re lay by five yards after being behind going into the last ex change. The combined high jump total of 17-5'i by Hood (5 10V4), Bob Mclntyre and Jer ry Shults (each 5-9V4) was 114 inches short of record. Don Garrison, Crater, had the the Individual height, 6 feet, as the Comets compiled 16-9. Bortis Leads Tom Bortis led the Tor nado to its 134-3'2 shot put win with 47-5. Derrell Wil liamson, Crater, was high man with 48-4V4. Allen Phillips took the javelin for Klamath Falls with 176-9 and Gary Hancock claimed the discus for the Pels with 147-10. Klamath's crew of Jack Mitchell, Jim Parks, Erick Peterson and Bill Sproat teamed in ' the distance medley. Grants Pass' Al Staley overtook Medford's Kent Blew on the homestretch for the Cavemen's verdict in the mile relay. Harvey Graham, and Ken Marshall ran the oth er laps for GP. The Cavemen's Larry Holmes was pole vault winner at 11-6. Ayres Bolsters Walt Ayres bolstered Med- Duck Team Wins Meet With FSC Eugene, Ore.-HJPD-Oregon's powerful track team swamp ed Fresno State college 87-43 Saturday in a dual meet.. The Ducks were without Dave Ed strom who competed in a spec ial decathlon event. Oregon won 13 of the 15 events with Fresno State tak ing the shot and high hurdles. The were four new meet marks broken, all by Oregon. The Ducks set new marks in the broadjump, discus, mile relay and 100-yard dash. Oregon swept the mile with Dyrol Burleson winning in 4:19.5, an unsually alow time for him. Fresno State took all three spots in the shot. James Costa got off a throw of 48-2V4 to win. , . KF Pelicans Topple GP Grants Pass - Klamath Un ion high joined Medford at the front of the Southern Ore gon conference baseball race Friday by defeating Grants Pass here 5 to 1. The Pelicans also took the shorter non-league nightcap 3 to 0. Klamath, which had four hit pitching by veterang Blake Griggs, won the main tussle on a four-run burst in the sev enth inning. The Pels put to gether a walk, a sacrifice by Sherm Allen, an intentional free pass, a double by Griggs, another base on balls and two errors. The intentional walk was to Dean Dunson because of a heavy blow hit earlier. Griggs struck out batters seven times and issued two walks. Bill Cole, tooklng a five-hitter for GP, fanned five batters. Jack Joyce 80 and Steve Cummins 91 as most of the Tornados llnksmen bettered previous day's scores,; North Eugene won the four way mix on Friday with 416. FOR ALL 314 East Main Edstrom Is Third High In World Eugene, Ore. - IUPD - Dave Edstrom of the University of Oregon became the third high est decathlon scorer in the world Saturday by scoring 8, 176 points in a special four man decathlon event held here. Only Vladimar Kutnetsov of Russia and Rafer Johnson of the United States have ever scored more points. Kutnetsov holds the world record of 8, 357 points and Johnson the United States mark of 8,302 points. Edstrom was first In four events Saturday and second in another. He competed with Steve Anderson, ex-Oregon track man; Bob Lawson, ex-Southern California trackster and currently an Oregon State coach, and Oregon State fresh man Steve Pauly. v Anderson was second with 6,470 points, Lawson third with 6,061 points and Pauly finished fourth with 5,602. Edstrom, Anderson and Lawson tentatively qualified for the national decathlon to be held here July 8-9 by scor ing over 6,000 points and Ed strom qualified for the Olym pic trials by scoring over 6,- 750 points. Only event Edstrom didn't win was the Javelin where Pauly got off a heave of 223-9 to win. Edstrom won the high hurdles, discus, pole vault and 1,500 meters. Crater Nips Ashland By 4-2 Score Ashland-Crater high push ed over three runs in the extra ninth inning to down Ashland 4 to 2 here yesterday in a practice baseball game, Jim Allen and John An horn singled and Pat Pepper doubled in the big frame. A fielder's option rap by Loyal Higinbotham and two Grizzly miscues also were factors in the scoring. Pitcher John Anhorn held the Ashlanders to four hits while whiffing nine batters and walking two. The Ash land thrower, Duane Nelson, yielded 11 hits. He walked two and fanned two. The Crater pitcher helped his cause by batting two for five. Pepper socked four for four with one blow double. Setting two records and grabbing first place counters in six events, the Crusaders ran up 60 points, 5'? better than totaled by host Phoenix high in second spot. Phoenix's 54 'i was followed by the Rogue River figure of 31. Illi nois Valley had 25 and Eagle Point 23Va. One record-blasting occa sion saw three teams beat the former standard. The St. Mary's quartet of Dave Rouh- ier, Mike Austin, Tom Rouh ier and Dick Evans ran the two-mile relay in 9:13.8. Phoe nix and Rogue River also beat the 9:16 time of St. Mary's last year. Bob Evans of St. Mary's, with 20 feet 4 inches in the broad jump, beat by two inch es the mark set by Ted Daw of Eagle Point in 195b'. Hanby Beats Own Mark One other standard fell when Mike Hanby of Illinois Valley won the pole vault with 12-4V4. He established the former record of 12-294 in 1959. St. Mary's also claimed the distance medley. Terry Coop er was a double winner for the Crusaders, with victories in the javelin and the high jump.
