Black Tornado's Thinclads
Cop Crown in Rogue Relays
"It looka just like old
times." That was an appropri
ate comment voiced yester
day as Medford High school
was on its way to victory in
the annual Rogue Valley re
lays at the Medford stadium.
. Black Tornado trackmen
ended the two-year reign of
Grants Pass in the relays in
convincing fashion and liven
. ed hopes for further upsurge
in Medford cinderpath and
field fortunes. They won eight
of the 13 events, set one new
record and tied another and
ran up a, tremendous 100V4
points. ,
Grants Pass was a distant
second with 75 'a and was
pressed for the No, 2 spot by
Crater which took third with
71 V4. Klamath Falls scored
50 and Ashland 30V4.
Mike Hood, Phil Hum
phreys and Dan Sieg combin
ed for the day's only record
ahatterlng effort. They aggre
gated 62 feet 9V4 inches, bet
tering by one foot the mark
' set by a 1956 Medford trio,
Jerry Close; Mike Hawkins
and Bob Tisdel. Hood leaped
21 feet 7 Inches, Humphrey's
21 feet and Dan Sieg 20-2 Vz.
A Tornado quartet of Hum
phreys, Kent Blew, Terry
Ryan and Len Griggs tied the
880-yard relay mark of 1:31.5.
Other Tornado triumphs
were in the high hurdles, the
440-yard relay, the two-mile
relay, the shot put relay, the
shuttle hurdles and the high
jump relay. Klamath Falls
won three events, the javelin,
discus and distance medley
and Grants Pass took two con
tests, the pole vault and mile
relay. While Crater gained no
. firsts, it scored strongly with
six seconds and two thirds.
Hood Wins Hurdles
Hood captured the high
hurdle race. His time of :15.3
actually put another record
on the books for Medford
since it was the first Rogue
running of this race. Walt
Ayres, also of Medford, was
second, Mike McCullough,
Humphreys, Jim Schmidt and
Griggs teamed for Medford
In the 440 win and a slick ex
change between Humphreys
and Schmidt made the differ
ence in the race. The :44.4
time was .1 second off the
record. In the two-mile Bob
Rlx ran the fastest leg for
Medford of 2:04 to gain back
distance lost. Ray Smith, an
choring in 2:05.9, took the
lead on the west lap and beat
off a stretch challenge by Ken
Marshall of Grants Pass.
Medford, with Griggs on
the final leg, won the 880 re
lay by five yards after being
behind going into the last ex
change. The -Tornado trio of
Robert Hamilton, Walt Ayres
and Doyle Andrews, leading
on every leg, won easily In
the shuttle hurdles with :34.5,
which is just .2 off the stand-

Crusaders Capture
Little Rogue Honors
Phoenix-St. Mary's of Med
ford, winner last year by a
half-point in its first appear
ance in the Little Rogue re
lays, chalked up its second
straight verdict in the meet
Saturday by a wider margin.
Setting two records and
grabbing first place counters
in six events, the Crusaders
ran up 60 points, 5'? better
than totaled by host Phoenix
high in second spot. Phoenix's
54 'i was followed by the
Rogue River figure of 31. Illi
nois Valley had 25 and Eagle

One record-blasting occa
sion saw three teams beat the
former standard. The St.
Mary's quartet of Dave Rouh-
ier, Mike Austin, Tom Rouh
ier and Dick Evans ran the
two-mile relay in 9:13.8. Phoe
nix and Rogue River also beat
the 9:16 time of St. Mary's
last year.
Bob Evans of St. Mary's,
with 20 feet 4 inches in the
broad jump, beat by two inch
es the mark set by Ted Daw
of Eagle Point in 195b'.
Hanby Beats Own Mark
One other standard fell
when Mike Hanby of Illinois
Valley won the pole vault
with 12-4V4. He established
the former record of 12-294 in
1959.
St. Mary's also claimed the
distance medley. Terry Coop

the Crusaders, with victories
in the javelin and the high
