Several Good Friday Scheduled The annual Good . Friday services sponsored by the Medford Ministerial associa tion will be held Friday, April 15, from 12 noon until 3 p.m. at- Zion Lutheran church, Fourth st. and Oakdale ave. The theme will be . "Seven Words from the Cross." The service will be divided Into 25 minute segments to accommodate worsh i p p e r s who may be able to attend only a part of the service. In addition to the main service, services will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. for school Five Churches To Host Missionary 1 Mrs. E 1 v a Vanderbout I missionary since 1946 in the Philippine Islands, will speak v this week end at a number of " Assembly of God churches in the county Mrs. Vanderbout is known as the "Americana pmong Ihe headhunters, since she is the only white woman to go among them During the 12 years Mrs. Vanderbout has been in the Philippines, she has built a ..children's home where she ' has cared for 50 children-at present there are 13 children in the home, most of them coming to her more dead than alive, but each one has lived. Traveling with Mrs. Van- derbout is her adopted daugh ter, Rosa, a 17-year-old girl of the Igorot tribe. She wears the native dress and sings in her native language. The two are being sponsored in their tour of this valley by the As sembly of God churches. Church Speaker Sunday, April 10, at 9:45 a.m. they will be at the Mer lin church. Sunday at 7:30 p.m. the As sembly of God church at Eagle Point is having them as guest speakers with friends from Holy Week Services Told for Catholics The most solemn and holy week of the Roman Catholic liturgical year begins the morning of Palm Sunday, al so referred to as the second Sunday of the Passion Time. The blessing and distri bution of palms will precede the 7 a.m. mass at Sacred Heart church. Weather per mitting, there will be an out side procession around the church grounds In commemor ation of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The palms will be distribu ted at all the Sunday masses except the 6 a.m. Also on Palm Sunday is the first solemn reading of the Passion according to Matthew. Public Demonstrations These public demonstra tions of loyalty to Christ the Savior and King initiate a week of ceremcnies and ser vices commemorating the events leading up to Christ's passion, death and resurrec tion. ELVA VANDERBOUT To Appear in Area speakers at a missionary rally In the Assembly of God church at Kerby. While Mrs. Vanderbout is in the Rogue Valley she and her daughter are to be the guests of the Henry De Youngs of Valley View road. All the meetings are open io the public. and at 7:30 p.m. In prepara tion for the Good Friday ser vices, Psalm 34, Ihe Old Test ament prophecies and the pas sion according lo Mark and Luke will be read at these masses to tell the slory Christ's suffering. The solemn high mass of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on Holy Thursday. Tills service commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist and Ihe first ordination of priests. Hosts needed for distribution at communion time on Good Friday are also consecrated at this mass. Stripping of Allan Following this mass there is the procession for the trans fer of the Blessed Sacrament to the side altar of repose, after which the rile of the stripping of the altars takes place. An 8 a.m. low mass will be said on Thursday for the students of SI. Mary's school so that there will be more room to accommodate the adult parishioners at the sol emn evening services. The Solemn Lithurgical Service of Our Lord's Passion and Death is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Good Friday. This service will consist of four parts: the scripture read ings, including the Passion according to John; the solemn prayers of the faithful for all the spiritual and material needs of mankind and the church; the unveiling and adoration of the cross; Bnd the distribution of Holy Com munion. Afternoon Service In the afternoon service', will be conducted for students attending public schools, and the adoration of the Living Christ at the altar of repose will continue throughout the day. All are Invited to spend some time in the church in prayer and meditation on this day. Following the Friday eve ning rites, '.ne church will re main bare and unused for ceremonies, signifying the In tense sorrow and desolation which followed Christ's death and burial, and no service! will take place until II p.m. on Holy Saturday when the Easter Vigil rites will begin. Robert Jacks First Presbyterian church, will speak. Mr. Young is host pastor. Individual Churches Other Good Friday services are scheduled by individual churches in Medford and oth er communities. Special Good Friday serv ices for Catholic students at tending public schools will be held between 2 and 3 p.m. in Sacred Heart church, it has been announced by the Rev. John Ilg. Included in these services will be holy hour prayers, stations of the cross, the read ing of a Bible account of the Passion of Christ, and a short instruction. Since Catholic students are not permitted lo attend non- Catnolic religious services, Father Ilg said, they and their parents are reminded that a special effort should be made by all the Catholic young peo ple to participate in the after noon programs provided for them. Ascension Lutheran church, 2501 Barnctt rd., will hold services April 15 from 12 noon until 3 p.m. The Rev. Ray mond Brandt, Calvary Luth eran church, Grants Pass, will assist in Ihe theme "The Sev en Last Words." The service will be arrang ed so worshippers will have an opportunity to leave or enter on the hour or the half hour. Young people of the church will assist with read ing of the Scriptures. Episcopal Service The Three Hour Vigil at the Cross will be held dur ing the noon to 3 p.m. period at St. Mark's Episcopal church. The clergy ' will lead meditations on the Seven Last Words. St. Peter's Lutheran church -Missouri Synod, will hold Good Friday services at 7:30 p.m. Phoenix community services will be held Friday at the First Presbyterian church at 7:30 p.m. The services at Grace Luth eran church Frances lane, Ashland, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday. Communion will be served during the 3 to 6 p.m. service at the Talent Methodist church, First and Wagner sts. Sanctuary Choir To Give Service The sanctuary choir of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st., will pre sent a service Sunday at 11 a.m. of scriptural narra tion and choral music. The pastor, the Rev, Har old M. Sanner, will speak on "Christ and the Crowd." At the 7 p.m. service his topic will be "Sharing Calvary. There will also be dedlca tion of babies in the morning worship hour and the Rev Fred Weatherford, former paster of the church, will be pre.t.nt to dedicate his grand' c'llld and assist the pastor in ihe dedication service. During the Sunday school hour, perfect attendance awards will be presented in the closing exercises. The meeting on ministry and oversight will be held to night at 7 o'clock. Charlotte Macy, Silverton, will be in charge. John Fankhauscr, South Sa lem Friends church, will speak at the 8 o'clock wor ship service. Dean Roberts, Central Point, will present the pro gram of the committee on moral action at 10 a.m. Sat urday. It will be followed by the committee on peace and service at 10:30 a.m. led by A. Clark Smith, Talent. Dr. Wayne Roberts,' Central Point will speak on the blood bank program. Eugene McDonald, Svenson will be the speaker at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. "Are We Ready for Easter?" will be the topic of the Rev. W. E. Martin's Palm Sunday sermon. The Junior choir will sing "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?" An ordinance service will be observed Maundy Thurs day evening. Eastwood Baptist Tell Sunday Topic "The Coronation" will be the Palm Sunday message at Eastwood Baptist church by the Rev. Clifford J. Young, pastor. The chancel choir wi! sing "Ride on in Majesty" at the 10:45 a.m. service. At 9:30 a.m. Mr. Young will teach the Builders' class. The discussion will be on the question our need for hu mility. At 7:30 p.m. the pastor will speak on "Youth's Challenge." The public is invited to attend, CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Councfl evangelist in Oregon for over 25 years. Mr. Evans studied for the ministry at Northwest Chris tian college and served with the Marines during World War II. After the war Mr. and Mrs. Evans owned and op erated an orchard in the Hood River Valley. In 1950 they both returned to Northwest Christian college where Mrs. Evans received a bachelor's degree in religious education and Mr. Evans received his bachelor's degree in theology. Mr. Evans did graduate work at Drake Divinity school, Des Moines, Iowa, and received his divinity degree. He served as pastor of churches both in Oregon and Iowa while at tending school. In 1957 Mr. Evans became pastor of the Westpark Chris tian church, Bremerton. First Sermon Here He will begin his ministry at the First Christian church Sunday morning. His subject for both the services will be "The Jericho Road." Al the first service the youth choir will sing the anthem "Ivy Palaces." At the 10:55 a.m. service Miss Joyce Hunter and Mrs. Mabel Sims will play an organ and piano duet "The Angel's Serenade" and the chancel choir will pre sent the anthem "Were You There?" Sunday will be Decision day when many of the people who have been taking the churchmanship classes will join the church. The dinner is not limited to those who participated in the contest, but is planned for the entire congregation and their guests. Holy Week Events Set by Methodists Holy Week observances at First Methodist church will begin with Dr. George Rose berry preaching Sunday on "The Urgent Message" for the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services. The soloist for the 9:30 a.m. service will be Miss Sharon Smith singing "God Speaks To Me." The Anthem by Ihe youth choir will be "Praise, Ye The Lord." The 11 a.m. service will include the altar choir singing "Jesus Christ Triumphant" and the chancel choir will sing "Awake My Glory" with Howard Buckner singing the solo part. There will be a presentation of the Lenten Folders at each ser vice. Holy Communion will be held at 8 p.m. on Maundy Thursday with the choir sing ing the anthem "Tis Midnight On Olives Brow." The combined choirs of the church will present a sacred cantata "Prepare The Way Of The Lord." The ministers of the church will read appro priate scriptures at intervals through the service. Jacksonville Church Sets Sunday Events Jacksonville - "The Cup of Gethsemane" is the sermon topic chosen for Sunday's service at 11 a.m. by Pastor W. Elwood Irby of Assembly of God church. Medford Presbyterians Tells Events for Week; Morning Meditations Set Palm Sunday services at the First Presbyterian church will-center around the ser mon topic of Dr. D. Kirk land West, "The Cost of Mak ing Christ Your King." The Senior High Choir un der the direction of Frank Kenney will sing, "Be Merci ful Unto Me, O God" and the chancel choir under the di rection of Lynn Sjolund will do the anthem, "Sing Alleluia Forth" with incidental solo by Robert Wright at the 11 a.m. service. At both services a men's quartet composed of Otis Swisher, E. A. Sinner, G. Robert Jacks and Herbert Roberts, will sing, "The Lord is My Shepherd." Robert Bridge will speak Sun day at 11 a.m. on "What Will We Give to Jesus?" at the First Presbyterian church. The sermon is the third in a series on questions asked about Jesus. The One Great Hour of sharing will be ob served. The new organ at the church has been installed and will be dedicated Sunday morning. Friday at 7:30 p.m. commun ion will be observed.
