Educators Discuss Placement Plan In State's System i. . E u g e n e Another step in She present educational trend o benefit the exceptional stu dent by bringing high schools md colleges closer together 1 ... 4UA TTnt..A.tt.. rf Oregon Tuesday. A committee of Oregon edu lators met to begin the co ordination of high school and kollege advanced placement rrograms. The committee, as yet un tiamed, was formed at an edu rational conference on the university campus March 29, Use of Chemical In Sterilization Of Insects Eyed J Washington-Sclence Serv ice) Control of house flies end fruit flies by chemical Sterilization, so that they can -Tot reproduce, is being tried jn experiments by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The experiments, involving one oi inree new memoas oi insect control' proposed by IJSDA's Dr. Edward T. Knlp- Jing, make use of a modified tjlutnatic acid to bring about self-annihilation of insects by .cnemicai sterilization. Tests nave snown tnat a concentration of as little as tine one-hundredth of one per tent of this chemical, added to food for laboratory-reared house flies, has prevented egg-laying or hatching and that one-half of one per cent , in a single leecting will cause permanent sterility in female flies. 30 Avoid Advert Effects : Male flies, according to jests made so far, are not sterilized by eating food con taining the chemical. To be jfully effective, chemical sex Aial sterilants of maximum ef fectiveness will have to pro Jduce sexual sterility in both males and females without I adverse effects on mating be- havior. ; Chemical sterilization. If eventually successful, would not require release of treated ines to wipe out normal ones' because food treated with an effective c h e m o - sterilant could be made generally available. Mar Not Be Suitable - Although satisfactory for use in testing the principle of chemical sterilization, the USDA points out, modified glutamic acid may not prove completely suitable as a prac- ; Llbai 1I1VM1U gL insect UU11UU1 by this method. I The other two control and I eradication methods suggest ed by Dr. Knipling Include the production and release of diseased insects to infect and kill their own kind, and of insects possessing lethal ge netic traits that could control an insect pest. The first of these is already being investigated. Local school officials who did not take part in the planning conference will be Invited to Join in the committee's devel opment. College Material The proposed coordinated program will allow high school students to study col lege level material while still in high school. If the student passes the college achieve ment exams, he will then be allowed to skip freshmen' level college courses which would duplicate this previous training. The committee's preliminary studies indicate that five Ore gon colleges, the two Eugene high schools, and Springfield High school have advanced placement programs. Many other of the state's high schools have college pre paratory and gifted student programs which are not part of an advanced placement program. Roland Bartel, assistant dean of the University s Col lege of Liberal Arts, said stir dies show that programs such as this will help both fast and moderate learners to do bet ter. The coordination and pro motion of advanced place ment would assure the serious student that his quality work in high school may be con tinued in college. Evergreen to Start Lone Pine Service Lone Pine Evergreen Bus lines will begin serving the Lone Pine area next Monday, a spokesman for the firm has announced. Beauty is big business. American women spend over $2 billion a year for beauty aids. To gain their share of the beauty market, toiletry advertisers invested an esti mated $24.9 million in news paper advertising this year. Fifty nine per cent of de partment store sales are to charge account customers. To reach these, as well as cash customers, department stores spend by far the greatest por tion of their advertising bud gets in the daily newspapers.
