(UPD Lar ry Lord Motherwell has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Mrs. Pearl Putney, 72-year-old Washing ton, D.C. widow. Under California law, the 42-year-old defendant would be eligible for parole in seven years-but Judge Warren Steel said he would recommend "substantially more than the minimum time" for Motherwell. Steel also denied a request for a new trial, based on de fense claims that Motherwell was convicted solely on cir cumstantial evidence. A jury found the defendant guilty of first degree murder- a crime punishable either by execution or life in prison. The jury returned the prison verdict, although both judge and jury indicated they felt one penalty was too severe and the other too lenient. Editor'! noli: Ttili li the final of thr.f artlrlri on canerr prevention, drterllnn and Irrntmtnt wrlltrn hv Dr. Warrrn 11. Coir, prr.ldrnl of the American Cancer Society. By DR. WAHHEN H. COLE President, American Cancer Society Written for United Press International It's really up to you. Your physician cannot detect an early cancer or an even earl ier precancerous condition without a patient. It is therefore your respon sibility to see Die doctor at the first danger signal of can cer, and for a regular check up. Let's talk about the check up and what it should include. There are cancers common to both sexes; others vary in men and women. So a word of advice to each, the ladies first. Breast cancer Is the first cause of cancer deaths among women. It takes 24,000 lives yearly, more than half of all cases. But many could be saved if cancer could be diag nosed before it colonizes in other parts of the body. In your check-up the doctor will look for a possible lump. Regular Examination But between check ups you must examine your breasts regularly once a month. The technique is simple. Your doc tor will show it to you, or the American Cancer Society will tell you where you can see the film "Breast Self-Exam-ination." It has been seen by millions of women and has saved many lives. Even more lives can be saved from uterine cancer. It will take a toll of 14,000 this year. Yet it is a dramatic truth that no woman need die of this disease. Cancer of the uterus can be detected when the very first malignant cells appear, often years berore tumor growth. We call it cancer in situ. The cells are cast off and can be picked up, put on a slide and seen through a microscope. This uterine cancer cell examination, also called the Pap smear for Dr. George N. Papanicolaou who developed it, should be part of the pelvic examination. which should be part of your regular check up. If every woman in the country had an annual smear test, deaths from uterine can. cer would drop to nearly nill And now a few important words to men. If you think of cancer as a "woman s dis ease" you are years behind the facts. Out of every 100 cancer deaths, only 48 are wo men and 54 are men. Lung cancer is the outstand ing menace to men; nearly 31,000 will die of it this year. Factors of this disease were discussed in an earlier article. I need only add this about your check up: We urge a yearly chest X-ray for all adults. It is a must for cig arette smokers. Don't forget you can stop smoking now and imnrove your chances against lung cancer. And if a cough persists for more than two weeks, see your doctor. Another common cancer site in men is the prostate, with 15,300 deaths estimated for 1960. Again many of these lives could be saved. Strikes Silently Do the words become a re frain? They should, for can cer strikes silently. With can cer of the prostate, silent growth can continue for years before you know anything is wrong. But your doctor can detect an early prostate con dition by a simple and pain less examination of the gland. It is a wise yearly precaution for men over 40. We come now to common cancers found in both sexes -in the colon and the stom ach. Pre-cancerous conditions in these sites were discussed earlier. But how are they ex amined in a check up? A routine office examina tion cannot delect a stomach tumor. But the doctor can look for conditions sugges tive of cancer when he checks acidity and looks for abnor malities in the blood count and urinalysis. He can also take stock of old digestive troubles. Any new ones, any change in bowel habits, call for a visit to the doctor with out waiting for a check up. And waste no time, for stom ach cancer is a grim enemy. Cancer of the colon is much more hopeful. And much more tragic. There is no contradic tion, for the potential of cure in this site is high, much higher than the stomach. Yet cancer of the colon and rec tum is the first cause of can cer deaths. Nearly 39,000 will die in i960. LET YOURSELF GO FOR AN OLDS... ENJOY SPRINGTIME IN A ROCKET! ' 3 whM miiiwii outi In case you are confused, the rectum is actually part of of the colon or large intestine. And more than half the tum ors in this site are found in the rectum. If they are de tected while localized to the mucous lining, they can have a rate cure as high as 73 per cent. And a routine office check up can find an early tumor in this site, or an even earlier precancerous condi tion. The American Cancer So ciety urges a digital examina tion of the rectum, supple mented by the proctoscope, or its variant the proclosigmol doscope. These instruments can "see" far enough Into the colon to detect the majority of lesions found there. Your doctor can suggest advance preparation to help him make! the examination with a mini mum of discomfort, perhaps none at all. If the examination is neg ative, you will be rewarded with the comfort of knowing . there is nothing alien at work in the colon and rectum. Or if there is, think how you have bettered your chances. Think how you better your chances against cancer gener ally - by the small effort of MAIL TRISUNI, M.df.ri, Or. ? a yearly checkup. Most of you Wtdiwday, April t. As the 86 American-made stock cars took off Tuesday I on the fourth of the five-day I 2,084-mile run from Los An. geles to Minneapolis, women drivers led in two of the six classes and held a second place in the third. Although there were only 20 women drivers among the 112 pilots of autos, women dominated the low-price six cylinder and low price V-8 classes when the cars pulled out today headed for Des Moines, Iowa, 408 miles away. Plymouth Leads Mary Hauser, Hollywood, held a slender lead In a Fly mouth with a 25.75 miles per gallon average for the first 1,396 miles in the low price six-cylinder class. Her lead represented an orange-glass less of gasoline than burned by an Identical Plymouth driv en by Peirce Venable, Redon- do Beach, Calif., a former champion. In the low price V-8, Mary Davis, Pomona, Calif., piloted a Plymouth at an average 23.75 m.p.g. to pace Jim Fos- dick, Los Angeles, in a similar car averaging 23.39. Rambler Paces Class Ginny Sims, North Holly wood, Calif., moved from third into second place In the compact car division by av eraging 28.01 m.p.g. Vlnce Piggins, Lrvonia, Mich., led the class In an American Ram bler with 29.51. The American Rambler fuel consumption was the lowest of all cars and led all six classes. Leaders In the other three classes were the Studebaker Hawk driven by Jim Peter son, Los Angeles, in the low medium price class; a Chry sler New Yorker piloted by Mel Alsbury Jr., Hollywood, in the upper-medium price range with 21.68 and an Im perial in the big cars with 21.25.
