In the normal heart, the beat or contraction starts in a "node" in the upper part of one of the auricles (upper chambers) of the heart, near where the great veins come in. From this node, a wnve of contraction shoots rapidly along a pathway of special tis sue called the hundle of His. When a branch leading oft from this "bundle" to the heart muscle is injured or de stroyed, perhaps by the plug- ging-up ol a little artery, the person has a "bundle-branch block." in some cases, the main bundle will be Injured in such a way that the contraction takes an abnormaly long time 10:30 Clemen'l-Tfma 11:30 Recordn With Ron 12:0(1 Ranch Time 12:13 Karin Market 12 3(1 Slock Market 12:.l.i Ranch-Time :30 N'ewi. They advertise that they cure certain diseases, such as arth ritis, and they say they can cure a bad prostate gland, or big piles, or varicose veins with medicine and not with an operation. All I can say is that every so often I see people who tell me they went to such a place, and either felt they had been swindled out of much money or had been fortunate enough to get away before they were robbed. One man said he had been told he must immediate ly have a $400 operation for cancer of his rectum. Because he recognized in time a brand of high pressure salesmanship, he left and came to see me. When I look ed in with a lighted tube and saw a perfectly normal rec tum, I sent him to two able rectal specialists who each agreed with me that there was nothing wrong. As I must keep saying In this column, any man who keeps sending out thousands of brochures advertising nig supposed ability to cure cer tain diseases for which no one yet has a Rood drug treatment, is not a physician. He may be hiring, as a 'front," a few men with some sort of med ical degree men who will make it look as if he were the time sucking tha juice from the plant. On plants where the infes tation is extreme, the little domes are so numerous that they completely cover the bark. Ordinary sprays are in effectual because of the waxy shell that covers the little bug, and protects him. In fact, it is exceedingly difficult to re move them unless one gets a finger nail under the edge of the shell and prys upward. Here is where our greatest benefactor among the insects gets in his best licks; the little spotted lady-bug, or lady-bird beetle, who walks slowly along the plant stems sucking from each little scale insect its lifeblood. These are the same beetles that saved the California orange crop on several differ- ent occasions. If you see some of these little beetles on your plants, leave them alone, they are carrying the ball and they are playing on your team. Don's Radio and Television shop, Ashland, is providing a large FM radio set to be placed in the Britt Student center lounge for those with out FM sets in their homes. The programs will begin at 9 p.m. The hour and a half show will feature two long-playing records cut by students of the College of San Mateo dance band during a live concert in 1956. Narrator is Ben Kilpak, director of the Del Norte county juvenile hall and gen eral extension division in structor in this area. Four of the compositions played by the 22-piece band are original, written by the boys themselves. Their direct or is Bud Young, former ar ranger for NBC. He and the performers arranged most of the pieces, however some are arrangements by Stan Ken ton, George Shearing, Pete Rugalo, and Neal Heafty. Wtkin B Kind To The Lady-Bug-Sha Feeds on Scale Insects There are literally millions of bugs we never see, and many of them don't even faintly resemble insects, ei ther in appearance or actions. Such are the "scale Insects" of which you probably hove a goodly number in your own shrubs or trees, for they are everywhere. They are colled "scale In sects'' because they look more like (lakes ol stale than they dn anything else, least of all like living, breathing, sucking DUES. Take for example the "oyster-scale." These little pesls resemble, both in color and general outline, the shell of the bivalve which lives in the sea. But they are very small, only about one twenty-fifth of an inch in length. The "cottony-scale" is another com mon one: looks like tiny ttitls io( cotton, scattered over the plant stem. The "snow-scale" looks much the same, only smaller if anything. These are found plentifully, at times, on hibiscus bushes. The San Jose stale has caused millions of dollars of damage to fruit trees, and is j considered the most destrue-1 live of any of the scale Insects. I Laws of many states now in- j list that - imported nursery stock, crossing their border, must be fumigated. To the same family, and also one of the really bad ac tors of the larger and hard to combat group are the "mealy bugs." They too are disgust ingly small and bothersome. On an intcctcd plant they look like flakes of powdered sugar; under a glass they look soft and velvety. - These little . fellows are sometimes captured and herd ed together by ants as a source of "honey-dew." The ant tickles the little mealy bug with its antennae and a drop of sweet fluid exudes from the body which is greed ily lapped up by the ant. The scale insects look great ly different under magnifica tion. They are wingless, leg less, eyeless, and spiritless, and very degenerate, covered with a hard shell which they make themselves from a wax like material exuded from their bodies. Under the little shell, which in most In stances looks like a tiny dome shaped turret, the Insect ro tates around and around,, all WALT'S TV A RADIO SERVICE Oldest Shea In Southern Oiefon NIW LOCATION 2300 South Stae Rosa" PH0NI SP 2-2244 Claied Saturday and Sundae I I ' blackbird . , I I ii Wll U just think:, I I I HOPE YOU MAKE 6000 I I SUPPOSE THAtY MORE I r mas Tuiwnw nc Il VV ( USE OF IT BY TAWN3 Out WOULD B plcfU ( uf X SpS l ) W lMY0L'y ALL THE BOOKS 'tOtl CAN READ..
