The Medical by Tranquilizers Many people ask about tranquilizers: Are tliey safe to take? What will they do? rW"lW!"" etc. The main difference be tween a seda tive, such as a bromide phenobarbital. and a good tranquilizer is that the seda tive, while quieting the person's saWBSfrl nerves, may slow him down nd make him sleepy. The transquilizer tends just to quiet his nerves, without mak ing him dull and sleepy. I was just reading in that fine jour nal, Science News Letter, that we Americans are now spend ing about $280,000,000 a year on tranquilizers. That gives some Idea of how many per sons must be suffering from jittery nerves and mild psy choses. The Kefuuver committee' has noted that the price for ou tranquilizer pills runs from 5.5U to $5.30. The most com monly-used onea now under investigation by the commit- ttee are Millown, Equanil, compazine, Thorazine, Spar ine, and Serpasil. There are more than 60 brands of such relaxing agents now on the market. These drugs have been used in large doses in the mentnl hospitals, where they make many of the Da- tients much quieter and so reasonable that the doctors can talk to them and help them. As a result, many more mental patients are now be- Traffic laws Protect Driver 'If every driver would real- ize that traffic laws are on his side, he wouldn't think of dis regarding them," Chief of Po lice Charles P. Champlin com mented today. "When you drive faster than the designated speed, make wrong turns, run red lights or stop signs or pass Improperly you run big rusks, he said. These risks can result tn traffic fines, costly car re pairs, towing costs, medical bills, lost wages, damage suits, lawyer's fees and loss of your driver's license. Add to these the suffering even a minor ac cident can cause, he said, and you have a real case for knowing and obeying traffic laws. "Unfortunately, some other wise law abiding citizens treat traffic laws casually and even ignore them when it becomes inconvenient to comply." Champlin said. Traffic laws art on your side, and so are the men who enforce these laws," he con cluded, "but they can't help you if you ignore them." Can Get Into Trouble Unfortunately, some per sons who are senstive to one or more of the tranquilizers can get into trouble by taking them, and especially if they start running up the dose. One type of tranquilizer can quickly produce an unpleas ant jaundice, and another can sometimes produce a depres sion so bad that the person has to be hospitalized. When starting to use any one of the hundreds of new drugs that have been synthe esized in chemial laboratories, the person should use the smallest effective dose. Also, he must keep watching for any symptoms that might in dicate the coming of danger ous side-effects. Then he , should quickly stop the use of the drug and discuss the , problem with his physician. One of the worst features about the use of quieting drugs, such as barbiturates, tranquilizers and alcohol is that many of the people who feel a great desire to be calm ed down and made forgetful perhaps of the mess they have made of their life-is that they have so little self-control and so little sense that they will take the pills, a half-dozen at a time, plus perhaps whiskey, a pint at a time. I have no fear at all of giving sedatives to a sensible, well-adjusted and self-controlled person, but I have to give such drugs to the "screwball" who, I know, will probably soon be taking a dozen tablets a day. May Get Nauseated Sometimes, the person sen sitive to a drug soon gets nauseated, or his skin breaks out with a rash, or he feels weak and ill, or he feels so blue he thinks of suicide. With many of the new syn thetic drugs, the person who takes them, week after week, ought occasionally to get a "while blood count" made, to see if the number of white cells in his blood is diminish ing. The reason for this is that sometimes the white count drops so low that the person suddenly loses all re sistance to infection, and in few days loses his life. What is sad is that so many of our wonderfully helpful new drugs must raise cain with an occasional patient. Even that usually safe drug, Aspirin, In an occasional case will cause the person'i face to swell up. Tuttday, April 5, 1960 Hepatitis Cases Hit Peak Week in ited States Washington-(Sclence Serv- lce)-The liver damaging dis ease known as hepatitis is on the rise in this country, latest U. S.
