Swimming Pool at Medford Y Reopens After Repair Work The Medford YMCA swim ming pool reopened Saturday after a three-week shut down for the first big change in its 11 years of operation. Although the pool has been closed for painting, the changes include a new heat ing and ventilating system, new lighting, and acoustical treatment of the ceiling. Dwight Seeley has been the general contractor on the work, and Wayne Struble, Medford, the architect. "To have this much needed renovation has been a goal of the YMCA aquatic commit tee for several years," Dr. William Roberts, YMCA aquatic chairman, said, "but funds were only recently available through the genero sity of the late John R. Tom lin." Maintain High Rating During the past 11 yeirs, the pool has maintained the highest class A,A rating from the state sanitary engineer be cause of its filtration and management practices meet ing the requirements. It is the only heated indoor pool operating the year around in southern Oregon or northern California, Dr. Rob erts noted. Water temperature is kept at 78 degrees which is ideal for most swimmers. The 77,000 gallon capacity tank was in perfect condition when drained. The sides or bottom of poured concrete showed no evidence of crack ing or chipping, he said. With the rapid growth of swimming and boating oppor tunities, the YMCA aquatic committee has concentrated on training special groups of persons with teaching and life saving skills, and, as a re sult, the majority of instruc tion at public pools and camps in the area have had the ben efit of courses taught at the Medford YMCA pool in life saving, water safety, instruc tors and leader examiner courses using the Red Cross and YMCA materials. Scuba Diving Claiiei Classes in scuba diving have also been popular recently since many persons now own this underwater breathing ap paratus. Training young persons for responsible leadership has been a chief aim of Dr. Rob erts as he worked on the pro gram, according to Robert L. Jones, YMCA secretary.
