Sunday, April 3, 1960 Slides of Alaska Scheduled for Arm Chair Group Mr. Harold Kenyon, 1980 Bueno Vista drive, will show colored slides of Alaska tor the Arm Chair Travel group Monday at 1 p.m. in the Senior Activity Center, 601 East Jackson street. Newcomers are welcome at the weekly showings of pic tures from all parts of the world. The event is free to any one over 50. Dr. Frank Roberts is assisted by Bill Jones in the program at the center and Mrs. Jud Green man is hostess. Robert Tay lor (at left) Carl Wlmberly Jr., and Mrs. Taylor were among those who viewed an exhibit of oils, wateroolors and sculpture sent to Medford by the Oregon Art alliance. The gallery, to be known as the Rogue gal lery, opened yesterday to the public and will be open daily between 12 noon and 4 p.m. Mr. Wimberly is a member of the new as sociation's board of directors. H. Johnson, vice pres ident; Kenneth Vannice, teach er vice president; Mrs. Clin ton Ayres, secretary; Wal lace West, treasurer: and Janne Calloway, historian. Mrs. DeHaven plans to at tend the Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers conven tion to be held in Medford April 26 through 28. Following a devotional pe riod led by Paul Evers, a sen ior student, and the flag sa utte led by Wallace West, junior, Mrs. DeHaven Intro duced the persons who were to participate in a panel dis cussion of questions sub mitted from the audience. Parents and students com prising the panel Included Mrs. Clinton Ayres, Mrs. Charles Pomeroy, Mrs. Ed ward Oswald, Will R. Hub bard, and E. A. Malloroy, par ents; and Mack Lemmon, sen ior; Miss Eda Larson, junior; Steve Geren, sophomore; Gary Clements, freshman, and Miss Delberta Spain, a 1959 gradu ate of Eagle Point High School. Clarence Davies, In structor, acted as moderator. Parents and students ap peared to agree that the age to begin dating and the num ber of dates per week depend ed on the maturity of the young person in question. They felt a discussion of the subject by the parents and the young person was defi nitely indicated. It was agreed that "how late to be out" depended somewhat on the oc casion, witn tne parents re serving the right to the final decision. A question from the audi ence asked what might be done to instill good study habits into students so that they would be prepared for the transition into college. General agreement seemed to be that if a student really wanted to get good grades and acquire a good back- Mrs. Rita Miller Speaker for Club Mra. Rita Miller has chosen the "South Seas" as the sub ject for her talk for The Wednesday Study Club at their meeting April 6 at the Girls Community Club. Mrs. L. V. Watkins, club president, will also appear on the program with a talk on a selected subject. Medford reached a milestone Friday with the opening of the city's first art gallery. The Rogue, at 220 West Main street. The temporary quarters were made into a suit able background for works of art by mem bers of the sponsoring group, the newly organised Rogue Valley Art association. Dr. J. R. Porto, (at left) is the president of the association and Ben J. Trowbridge Jr., is a member of tne boars. Miss Marilyn Hixson is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Hixson, Central Point; Mrs. Hixson is presi dent of Southern Oregon Society of Artists. The modern sculpture is one of the pieces obtained through the Oregon Art Alliance for the gallery's first exhibit. Watercolors and oils are also on display. The lesson will include ways of washing and Ironing how to remove lint and balls. and how to keep them from becoming dingy. Miss Norma Hague, Jackson County 4-H club agent gave the lesson to the unit project leaders. Many of the units will start planning this month for their May festivals. The object of the festivals is to acquaint the public with the Home Extension program, to show i what has been accomplished during the year, and to have a time of fun and fellowship. Reese Creek Among the five units which have scheduled meetings this week is the Reese Creek group which will meet Tues day, April 5. at 10 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Ben Garden-er. Co-hoslesscs will be Mrs. Lee Damon and Mrs. Ralph Lacy. Lake Creek Lake Creek group will meet Wednesday, April 6, at the home of Mrs. Foster Swig ert, Meridian road. The project lesson will be given by Mrs. Willaid Walch and Mrs. Murray Bartling. The mectine will begih at 1 10:30 a.m. Officers will be elected for the next year. For luncheon arrangements contact Mrs. lleriry Meyer. Those attending are to take their own table service. Mrs. Dwight Albright and Mrs. Edward Albright will be project leaders. Agate Unit The Agate Home Extension unit will meet Wednesday. April 8, at 10.30 a m. at the home of Mrs. Joe Wray, Gib bon road. Mrs. D. A. Bever and Mrs. John Email will give the lesson. A business meeting and election of officers will be held during the morning. Members are to take their Easter hats made from kitch en utensils for the auction. Applegate Valley Units Mrs. Fred West and Mrs. Niel Suttell ' will give the demonstration at a joint meet ing of Applegate Valley ex tension units to be held at the Grange hall Wednesday, April 6. at 10:30 a.m. The project leaders have asked members to take empty liquid soap cans and soap boxes. The election of officers will be held and the spring festi val discussed. A potluck dinner will be served and members are to take their own table service. Child care will be available. Steinmetz Family ' Returns From Vacation Gold Hill-Mr. and Mrs. Mil ton Steinmetz and son, Harry Leigh Steinmetz, returned to their home here after a ten day vacation in Portland where they were guests of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Steinmetz and children, John, Robert, Mary Beth, Barbara and In fant son David Allen. This was the first time the Stein- metz's had seen their new grandson. Prior to returning home they stopped at McMinnville where they visited Mrs. Stein. metz's niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Lucas and children Gary, Noreen and Sherry. Mrs. Lucas is the for mer Virginia Houghman of the Wimer area. Talent Club Plans Program on Birds Talent Mrs. Margaret Chandlee, Yreka. will present a program on birds at a meet ing of Talent Garden club April 6 at the home of Mrs. Russell Mix, 1438 Grand ave nue. Mrs. George Hartley, will be co-hostess. Wild Shrubs Club Topic Mrs. Ivan T. Skyrman, Cen tral Point, gave talk on Wild Shrubs at a meeting of the Little Garden club of Medford March 30 at the home of Mrs. G. R. Oleson, 201 North Keene Way. Mrs. Skyrman spoke of where the various species of wild shrubs may be found in this area. Mrs. R. T. Nichol, Medford, Siskiyou district director of the Oregon Federation of Garden clubs, attended tne meeting and gave a report and showed slides on "Native Plants." Mrs. Nichol was as sisted by Mrs. C. O. Long. Mrs. W. T. Mclntyre was cohostess and Mrs. R. L. Howe was a guest. An all day field trip Is planned for the April 13 meeting. AH members bring a sack lunch and meet at the home of Mrs. George Sample, Jacksonville, at 10 o clock. 1 Executive Meeting Planned by Group An executive meeting of the Degree of Honor Protective association will be held at the home of Mrs. Irl Groves, 1008 Redd avenue, at noon Mon day.
