Rogue River Civic Club Plans Tea Rogue River -Rogue River Civic Improvement club will observe National Library week with a silver tea to be held at the Rogue River Pub lic library, Thursday, April 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. Eleven members of the Civic club attended the 47th annual convention ot First district, Oregon Federation ot Women's clubs, held in Med ford at the First Methodist church, March 24. The Roguo River Civic club was repre sented on the President's pan el by Mrs. Lynabel Deck. Mrs. Cloyd Dick and Mn. Ralph O. Chapin participated In the international hostesses panel which was conducted by Mrs. Coral Sabo, Klamath Falls, chairman of interna tional affairs. .Mrs. H. J. Ste phens, Rogue River, was in stalled first vice-president of the district. First District clubs accept ed the invitation of the Grants Pass Women's Federated Breakfast club to hold the 1961 annual district conven tion in Grants Pass. In addition to those previ ously mentioned other mem bers attending the convention were Mrs. William White, Mrs. Jerusha Moore, Mrs. Beryl Ingle, Mrs. Goldle Se mon, Mrs. Robert Rowlison, Mrs. William Trotter and Mrs. William Fields. The next meeting of the Rogue River Civic Improve ment club will be held Friday, April 8. The guest speaker will be Miss Eva Marie Trlm mel, of Austria, an exchange student who is spending a year in Grants Pass under the American Field Service pro gram. Pythian Sisters Attend District Meet in Roseburg Attending the district con venlon ot the Pythian Sisters at Roseburg yesterday from Medford were Mrs. Jack Hall, convention junior; Mrs. Wal ter Grochockl, representative; Mrs. Don Anderson, past dist rict deputy grand chief, and Mrs. Harry Bryant, past grand chief, who gave the welcom ing address. Mrs. Edward Bostwlck, most excellent chief, and her officers did the ladles' Initia tion work. The officers were Mrs. George Thomas, excel lent senior; Mrs. Grochockl, excellent junior; Mrs. Hall, manager; Mrs. Carl Fichtner, protector; Mrs. Alice Smith, guard; Mrs. Anderson, secre tary; Mrs. Vesta Morgan, ' treasurer, and Mrs. Bryant, past chief. Mrs. Bertha Nelson, past auxiliary president was wel comed home at a meeting of Colonel Sargent auxiliary, United Spanish War Veterans, Sunday, March 20. Mrs. Nel son is the mother ot Mrs. James Vandersteen, the local auxiliary president. Mrs. Nelson was Installed secretary-treasurer by Mrs. Hans Rammin. Mrs. Mary Nichols, Mrs. Harry Priem and her two imaM daughers were guests for the dinner. Mrs. ' Priem and family of .Texas are visit ing her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Vandersteen. t . . . Auxiliary Honors Recent Birthdays '' The Ladies Auxiliary of the Carpenter's Union held a party, March 25, honoring members with birthdays dur ing the months of January through June. The party was at the home of Mrs. George Watson, 1638 Stewart avenue. Each honored member re ceived a gift from the auxil iary. Entertainment was var ious games with prizes given to the winners. The evening ended with the serving of refreshments. Rebekahs Plan Friendship Night At the last meeting of Olive Rebekah lodge, plans were completed for Friendship night to be held April 18. All Rebekah lodges in the district have been invited to attend. During the meeting the lodge approved a recommen dation that the Decoration of Chivalry be presented to Mrs. Homer Vlnzant during the Assembly session at Eugene In May. All past noble grands were honored at the last meeting: each was presented a small favel. The next meeting will be held Monday. April 4, at 8 p.m. at the IOOF hall. Mem bers attending are to bring an original Easter bonnet, in a tack. Junior Symphony Conductor Takes Absence Leave Portland -The Portland Junior Symphony association announces that Jacob Avshal omov, permanent conductor of the nationally famous 80 member youth orchestra, has been granted a sabbatical leave for the 1960-61 season. Donald Thulean, dean of the School of Music at Pacific university, Forest Grove, has been selected to conduct the orchestra during Mr. Avshal omov's absence. Mr. Avshalomov and his family plan to spend the year In Rome, where he will work on his own compositions. Director Thulean was grad uated from the University of Washington in 1950, and re ceived his master's degree in music in 1952. He has done professional work in New ork City, and was made a member of the faculty of the Aspen Music School in 1958. His appointment to the Pa cific university faculty came in 1955. During the season Director Thulean will continue at Pa cific University on a part time teaching basis. DAR Chapter Announces Good Citizenship Awards Two Jackson county high school senior girls were hon ored at the annual "good cit izenship girl" tea given by Crater Lake chapter, Daugh ters of the American Revolu tion, at Girls Community club March 26. Honored were Miss Linda Slessler, Medford high school, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cameron S. Slessler, and Miss Shirley McAllister, Crater high school, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. McAllis ter, Central Point. Miss Sless ler is president of Girls' league at Medford High school, belongs to the girls' pep club, and sings in the school choir. She teaches Sun day school at Zlon Lutheran church. Miss McAllister is president ot Girls' league at Crater High school, Is a mem ber of National Honor society and active in Comettes, girls' pep club. During the business session Mrs. M. M. Morris was elected regent. Also named to office were Mrs. Judd Greenman, vice-regent; Mrs. E. C. Root, chaplain; Miss Florence Gif ford, recording secretary; Mrs. G. O. Taylor, corresponding secretary; Mrs. T. J. Gifford, treasurer; Mrs. J. L. Houck, registrar; Mrs. O- C. Rawlings, historian; Mrs. V. J. Bolton, Mrs. H. S. Chirgwin and Mrs. L. E. Dickson, directors. The program was a panel discussion of the United States constitution. Larry Brunette sang, ac companied by Ray Lewis. Guests were Miss McAllis ter's mother, and Mrs. W. A. Thompson, Mrs. Hugh Shurt leff and Mrs. A. T. Hatch. Mrs. Oscar T. Heyerman was chairman of the refresh ment committee. Mothers to Mark 10th Anniversary, The tenth birthday anniver sary of the Medford chapter of Gold Star Mothers will be observed at an open meeting and potluck luncheon Tues day, April 5. The event will take place at the home of Mrs. Mary Fredericks, 635 Palm street, beginning at 11 a.m. All Gold Star mothers, whether members of the or ganization or not, are Invited.
