Central Poin t Luncheon Monday at the home of Mra. Charles Hughes were Mrs. Millie Johnson, Central Voiat, and Mrs. Haywood f-itmlty and her mother, Mrs. Maude Simmons, both Ash ltd. . Mr. Simmons had just re turned from a three months visit in Los Angeles at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Rennels. Mrs. Lemley had also just returned from a three month's vacation. She and Mr. Lemley visited rela tives and friends in Idaho, Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nevada, and Cali fornia. Mrs. Lemley is the mother of Dr. Creatis D. Lemley. Werner Playing music from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, Mildred Dilling, harpist, gave a concert last night for Jack son County Civic Music asso ciation. She displayed a mas tery of her chosen instru ment which made the concert one of the highlights of the season. Beginning with Bach, Cou- perin and Handel, Miss Dilling introduced the audience to the sonorities and brilliances of the instrument. She also demonstrated a fine muscian "ship in her interpretation of the styles of these composers. Pausing to give a brief talk about the various types of harps placed over the stage, some dating as far back as 35 B. C. she also showed considerable knowledge of the harp with some amusing asides. According to theory, the harp was born of some bow and arrow hunter who noticed the sound of the string and by adding other strings thereby created the harp, making it the oldest stringed instrument. She displayed harps from Africa, Egypt, Europe of the Middle Ages, Irish and Scotch. It was an interesting array ' of many sizes and styles; a ! most informative talk. From the 19th century, Miss Dilling played an arrange ment of the "March of the Men of Harlech" arranged by John Thomas for Queen Vic toria, the "Liebestraum" : by Liszt, arranged by Henriette Renie, Miss Dilling's teacher, and an original work by Zabel, "The Fountain." It is . our opinion that "The Liebe straum" is ideally suited to the harp and we are happy to have heard it thus render ed. The shimmer and irides cence of this music as demon strated by the artist, for such she most surely is, surpasses any sounds that I can be brought forth from a piano. After intermission, Miss Dilling" delved into 20th cen tury music, all by French composers except for two Spaniards. The French are very partial to the harp and have written extensively for it with great success. Notable among these is Debussy, whose "Clair de Lune," orig inally for piano, was another highlight of the evening. The use of harmonics in this piece gave a most real im pression of moonlight most exquisite. The other French composers made much use of the harp glissando' which is possible on no other instru ment. . - t The works of the two Span iards, Albeniz and .Salzedo, were most interesting, espe cially some of the effects by the latter. , Of this group the best was "Dance of the Sprites," , by Renie. Only a really great virtuoso could play this piece with its heavy demands on pedaling. But beyond that it was the most, interesting and intriguing musically and har monically. Adding nonfat dry milk to a recipe is a good way to in crease the nutritive value of many dishes. . . ' Miss Dilling was generous with encores and we hope she will come again. To have held an audience for more than an hour in rapt attention be speaks the power of her artistry.
