Lemmon, perhaps the most iconoclastic of
all society belles, who eloped with divorced
society playboy Jacob ("Jakie") Webb in
1941. Characteristically, her "wedding ring"
was a beer-bottle opener. She waited until
1945 to divorce Jakie only because he spent
most of the time, including a six-month
court-martial sentence, in the Army.
Barbara Billingsley, daughter of Sherman
who operates New York's famous Stork
Club, ran away to marry John Christoffers,
a 28-year-old commercial photographer.
Sherman had hoped she would marry one
of his more socially acceptable patrons and
shed no tears when Barbara returned home
five years later.
The setting for perhaps the most dramatic
of all rich-girl disappearance cases was
New York in the '10s. Dorothy Arnold, a
debutante from one of that city's wealthiest
families, was chatting pleasantly with friends
outside a Fifth Avenue bookstore. Minutes
later, she disappeared; no trace of her has
ever been found. All that is certain is that
she had aspired to be a writer and her fam
ily had ridiculed her efforts. This, coupled
with a feeling of futility toward the role of
"rich girl," has been advanced as a reason
for her running if, indeed, she did run away
and was not the victim of foul play.
The police discovered several interesting
facts in their investigation. Unknown to the
family,-Dorothy had a suitor, an older man
and a most unlikely choice for a society girl.
For a time, there was conjecture that she
might have fled with him and that he had
done away with her in a fit of jealousy. When
that proved unfounded, police concentrated
on a mysterious package that had been de
livered to her only a few days before her
disappearance while she was visiting a friend
in Boston. She never showed her friend the
contents, but whatever was inside the pack
age caused her to end her visit and rush back
to New York. Some believe the package was
a rejected manuscript and a final blow to
Dorothy's pride. ,
Another curious fact was that Dorothy's
family didn't report her disappearance to
the police for some time,, although they
claimed she had no reason to run away. Even
during the police investigation they were
reluctant to cooperate. To this day, the case
remains unsolved.
Psychiatrists interviewed by family
weekly all arrived at the same basic rea
sons why rich girls run away from home.
"Lack of love and security at home," asserts
Dr. Smiley Blanton of the famous Marble
Church Religio-Psychiatric Clinic.
"There are well-to-do families where a
child, in a sense, is almost abandoned ex
cept that he lives in the same house with
his parents," says Dr. Franklin Robinson,
Director of the Children's Service Center in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and one of the foremost
authorities on the subject. "The parents are
often so busy that they assign a lot of their
own duties to maids and governesses. This
certainly produces insecurity."
Disappearance of Dorothy Arnold, a rich girl
who wanted to become a writer is still unsolved.
A New York psychiatrist, who has treated
many wealthy children and asked to remain
anonymous for that reason, agrees with Dr.
Robinson, but explores more deeply: "From
my own experience, I certainly know that
turning over children to governesses is very
common. Then, during the formative years
when a child needs close relationships,
there's much more divorce, drinking, and
casual affairs among the well-to-do, for the
simple reason that their wealth permits it.
It's understandable that the kids run away
if there's such a poor family relationship."
Gamble Benedict herself spoke eloquently
for the "poor little rich girls."
"I was miserably lonely," she said after
running off with Porumbeanu. "A girl like
me, dealing with the same Social-Register
kind of people, meets someone like Andre,
who knows the world, who shows you a gen
tleness you never knew. You say to your
self: 'For this, 111 brave the world!'
"We're pushed into socially acceptable
schools," says the girl who was raised by
her grandmother. "There's pressure to have
contact only with the children of our own
group. Anyone who does anything different
is sent to a psychiatrist"
Gamble tells how she was not allowed to
study ballet because it was "supposed
to be bad for my figure"; how she couldn't
study music seriously because she had re
fused to play the piano as a young girl. The
result of such an upbringing, she claims, is
inevitable.
"They (society girls) marry boys from
their own set," Gambi says. "They hate them
within a year. Then they become drunks or
.go from divorce to divorce or both.
"I swear that this kind of money is nothing
but a headache," she continues, speaking
about the millions that will be hers if her
grandmother doesn't disinherit her. "It
means watching business conditions, getting
heartburn over income tax or corporations
or what not"
One syndicated columnist has a less com
plicated explanation. He says that the basic
reason rich girls run away is the sudden
realization even if it's a subconscious one
that while their money and prestige can
open many doors, it can never win respect
or love. That's a frightening realization for
a young girl who observes others being loved
and respected even though they can't buy
minks and sports cars and this can be
frightening enough to make the desperate
ones nm away.
