Ike, flixon Will Headline Kickoif Wasfcmgton (DPD President Eisenhower and Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon will headline a star-studded GOP campaign kickoff event here April 4, It was announced Thursday. Eisenhower will address the rally, along with other GOP leaders, in an effort to raise funds for the 1960 election campaigns. Entertainment will include the1 Sammy Kaye Orchestra, gospel singer Mahalia Jack son, Metropolitan Opera star Roberta Peters and the Ralph Hunter Choir. Mayo CUaJa Cholesterol May Not B Cause of Atherosclerosis Anyone who has read sci ence for 60 years, as I have done, knows how often men wilL get e n t h usiastic about some discove ry, only to find later that they had jumped at conclu s i o n s and had not paid enough attention to Dr. Alvarez those few facts which did not fit into their theory. For some time we have been hearing that fatty substances in the blood, and especially cholesterol, cause hardening and ulcera tion of the arteries. Now, more and more reports are coming in to show that, al though cholesterol probably has something to do with the disease, it isn't the cause. I re cently read that Drs. J. C. Pa terson, E. C. Armstrong, and Lucy Dyer (reporting in the Canadian M. Jour, for Jan. 2) have made extensive studies of the amount of arterial dis ease found during autopsies on 191 people, and have found that the extent of his disease did not correlate well with the amount of cholester ol the persons had had in their blood during life. A man with a record of low choles terol sometimes had marked arterial disease while a man with a record of high choles terol might have but little arterial disease. But we must not get discouraged: doubt less, better and more perti nent facts will soon be found. I read that In April 1957, in the Manchester Memorial hos pital in Manchester, Conn., Drs. H. J. Lockwood, Lane Giddings, and . J. Thorns started a plan that has worked well, and is saving the patients much money. This is important, because with la bor costs soaring, hospital costs to patients have sky rocketed in recent years. The new idea is to place each pa tient in one of four groups. The seriously ill have special care with much nursing; then there are persons moderately ill, some of whom may be able to look out for themselves, and even go to a dining-room for their meals. Some have only a chronic disease, and hence need little more than board and lodging. Naturally, a patient who comes in acute ly ill, or who has an opera tion, will need much care for a few days, and then he can be shifted to one of the other classifications. As a result of this, the average daily cost per patient has been lowered by 20 per cent. Polaris Rocket Test Successful Cape Canaveral, Fla.- (UPD -Navy Polaris test rocket leap ed 75 feet from a "pop-up' tube early Friday to begin a flight over the Atlantic ocean. The Navy said in Washing t o n preliminary indications were that the flight was "com pletely successful and all test objectives were met." The tube, a "ship motion simulator," is similar to a de vice from which combat ready Polaris missiles will be launched aboard submerged nuclear submarines later this year. The bottle-shaped rocket, a 28-foot tall advanced proto type of the operational model, was shot from the tube on a column of compressed air. It hovered for a split-second above the cape before solid fuel engines ignited and sent it speeding into dark, low hanging clouds.
