Dr. Melitta Schmideberg, Director of Clinical Service, Association for the Psychi atric Treat ment of Of f end ers, in New York, re cently con cluded that if the modern plan for bring i n g up chil dren without any control, and according Or. Alvarez to the queer theories of some psychiatrists, had been good, by now we ought to know it. There ought to be much less juvenile delinquency and crime, much less neurosis, and much less maladjustment. Actually, she, a psychiatrist who had had a great exper ience in this field, says that "one must conclude that the results are disappointing." The teachers in our schools are harassed by children who have never been taught to re spect anyone in authority. There is no indication that the mental health of our young people has improved. We all know that the problem of teen-age delinquency has been increasing in seriousness. We are coming more and more to realize that schizophrenia is showing up in children, and the number of neurotics is cer tainly not less than it was under the sternest of Victor ian upbringing. Perhaps our crazy ideas of gladly permit ting a child to grow up as an undisciplined "little stinker," and our idea of never re straining him or helping him to become a sensible, well controlled adult, have failed. Why don't we admit that the foolish ideas of some foolish theorizers have led only to disaster? Why don't we use our brains again? Doctors Should Stay Human I recently read in the Jour nal of the AMA a quotation to the effect that "There is an occupational hazard in the practice of medicine that, if not guarded against, can do the individual doctor, the pro fession, and society a great deal of harm. It is the tempta-. tion we doctors have to think of ourselves as individuals set apart from the rank and file of humanity: set apart by knowledge, skill and power." A few of us doctors get the idea that no patient should ever question a thing we say; but obviously, when this com plex grips one of us, it is most unfortunate. We doctors, be ing human, must often make a mistake. Worse yet, there are so many diseases that we do not understand that often we cannot work a cure. We have no good drug to use. We might as well admit this frankly.
