Crater Has 6 Letfermen Out for Diamond Drill By FRED DOWN United Press International Charlie Dressen feels a lot younger today thanks to old pros Warren Spahn and Red Schoendienst. In fact, the 61-year-old man ager of the Milwaukee Braves could have danced an Irish jig after the roles played by Spahn and Schoendienst in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the American League cham pion White Sox. Spahn, 38, pitched five shut out innings and allowed the White Sox only three hits in his first competitive appear ance of the spring while Scho endienst, making his first start since stricken by tuberculosis after the 1958 season, played errorless ball at second base and drove in a run with a fifth-inning single. Bubbling With Enthusiasm Less than a week ago Dres sen was blasting the Braves as a team "that hadn't learned Celts Edge rriors XJmited Press International The Boston Celtics appar itl$ called their shot when they said Philadelphia could n't ks.t them when it count ed. Bcston o v e r c a m,,e Wilt Chamberlain's 42-point spree Wednesday night to defeat the farriors, 111 - 105, and take 1-0 lead in the best-of-sevc,n Xastern Division finals of the National Basketball Association playoffs. The St. Louis Hawks drew first blood in the Western finals by defeating the Min neapolis Lakers, 112-99. Before the playoffs began, Bob Cousy mentioned that Chamberlain would have to be "100 per cent effective" for the Warrior victory. Wilt made it in the scoring col umn, but he couldn't top Bill Russell in rebounding as the 6-10 Celt edged Chamberlain in retrieves, 30-29. Sharman High Sharman was Boston's high man with 25 points. St. Louis, recalling last year's upset by the Lakers in the playoffs lost little time in wrapping up this one. The Hawks, with playmak-1 er Slater Martin riding the bench with a muscle injury, had its scoring punch of Cliff Hagan and Bob Pettit work ing to perfection. Hagan tal lied 29 points and Pettit scored 23 while nabbing 19 rebounds to stall the. Laker machine. Elgin Baylor, who averaged T9.3 points per game for Min r.?Foiis during the regular srasoh. was held to 19 on the c-cse guarding of Hagan and Dave Piontek. St. Louis ripped to a 55-42 b - t-t'me lead and were ahead Ly ' 9 points, 63-44, early in tlie third period. much under two previous managers," but he was bub bling with enthusiasm after watching the Braves hand the White Sox their first loss after four victories in the Grape fruit League. "Those are the kind of per formances that make a team look like a world champion," said Dressen. "There's nothing like a couple of old pros to make you look good. Spahn, a 20-game winner 10 times, wants strong spring showings to persuade Dressen that he should work on a reg ular once-every-fourth day ro tation again this year. Schoen dienst, of course, is bidding to make one of baseball's most dramatic comebacks in compe tition with a squad of lean and hungry kids fighting to win his second base job. Hurls No-Hitter The first no-hitter of 1960 was turned in when Ben Dan iels and Jim Umbricht pitched the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. Daniels, who was 7-9 with a 5.44 earned run average with Pittsburgh last season, struck out four and allowed only one batter to reach base on a hit batsman for five in nings. Then Umbricht, 14-8 and 2.78 with Salt Lake City, also fanned four and retired 12 batters in order over the last four frames. Bill Virdin had three hits to pace the Pirates 11-hit attack. Bruins Post Hockey Win By United Press International The Boston Brums, first National Hockey League team to beat Olympic goalie Jack McCartan, remained hopeful today of gaining a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Third-period goals by Bron co Horvath and Dick Meiss ner carried the Bruins to a 3-2 triumph over McCartan and the New York Rangers in Wednesday night's only NHL action. It was the first defeat suf fered by the Rangers since McCartan moved into their net after leading the U.S. team to victory in the Winter Olympics. But more important to the Bruins, it moved them to within two points of the fourth - place Detroit Red Wings in their skirmish for the final berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Both teams now have only two regular season games remaining. New York -(DPD- All-Ameri ca Tom Stith of St. Bonaven ture and Allan Holmes of Utah have been named to the East and West All-Star bas ketball squads that meet in Madison Square Garden, March 26. Stith, a 6-5 junior, averaged 32 points per game during the regular season. Results: La Pointes 3 (Jones 433) 2443; Kim's 1 (Morris 349) 2393. Brown's 3 (Bates 481) 2653; Ho tel 1 (Smith 512) 2640.
