178 Million Board Feet of Timber Is Harvested in RRNF 2 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. B Thursday, Mirch 10, 1960 Recreation and watershed uses and values of Rogue Riv er National forest were pro tected and increased in 1959 simultaneously with the har vesting of 178. million board feet of timber, according to C. E. Brown, forest super visor. The "Rogue River National Corest Accomplishment Re port of 1959," now being dis tributed, stresses multiple use of all of the resources of the public area of forest and mountain land. "Timber production is, of course, the most evident and tangible benefit of the forest but," Brown said, "all timber harvesting is done with care ful attention to the protection and enhancement of water shed' values, recreational use, forage for domestic stock, deer and -elk, and above all protection of the" soil the asic resource." " Salvaged Timber , Salvage of scattered dead timber accounted for 13.5 mil lion board feet of the 1959 cut. Another 9.5 million was harvested as pulpwood from lodgepole pine stands on the Klamath district of the forest. Two cords of pulpwood are considered the equivalent in timber volume of one thou sand board feet of saw timber. The balance of 155 million board feet of mostly green sawtimber is chargeable against the allowable average annual cut of 146 million, Brown said. This objective is established to assume a sus tained supply of timber for all time. Timber sold during the year totaled 133 million feet for a value of slightly over $4,000,000, he added. Timber "cut" in the timber scaled as it is hauled out after being cut and logged. Some times one sale contract may be cut over a period of several years although most sales for small values are "cut" in the same year as sold. Area Logged Area logged during the year amounted to about 2 per cent of the total forest with . less than one-half of one per cent being clear cut, about three fourths of one per cent selec tively cut and another three fourth of one per cent salvage logged for dead timber only. Clear cut areas were re forested, after slash was dis posed of, Brown said.
