Girl Scout week starts to day and continues through March 12. The theme this year is "You can count on her to be prepared." Mrs. Charles U. Culmer, national presi dent of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., commented on this theme by saying "This empha sis on preparedness is as old and at the same time as con temporary as Girl Scouting itself. While adhering to the Girl Scouts' basic code of eth-J Study of Luke To Open Tonight The first session of the classes to be held in First Methodist church on the study of "Luke's Portrait of Christ" and conducted by Dr Gertrude Boyd Crane, pro fessor of religion at Pacific university, Forest ' Grove, will begin at 7:30 p jn. to night, March 6. Co-hostesses will be Mrs. Gail Buffington and Mrs. William Childreth. ' : : ; Meatless Meal For a meatless lunch or supper make a hearty chow der. Pare and dice two medium-size potatoes, and cook with 1 tablespoon instant minced onion in salted water to cover. Meanwhile, cut a cup of ripe olives into gen erous wedges. When potatoes are tender, add to them a small can of corn, the olives, a large pat of butter, about 1 pint and a half of milk, and salt and pepper to taste. Heat just to simmering, and serve at once, in large bowls. To go with the olive corn chow der, set out a plate of toasted crackers, a wedge of your favorite cheese, and a basket of fresh fruit. , . . f Old Favorite, New Touch Baked stuffed potatoes are especially tasty seasoned with a little instant minced onion, topped with grated American cheese and sprinkled with dry dill. Make 'em ahead and heat through shortly before serving. : f- South Seas Fruit Cup Enhance spring menus with a South Sea fruit cup. Canned fruit cocktail adds gay color and helps stretch more ex pensive fresh fruits. Combine drained fruit cocktail with diced orange," diced fresh pine apple, chopped preserved gin ger and grated orange rind. Add orange juice to cover fruits and several tablespoons light rum; chill thoroughly. ics and promise of duty to God and country, our organi zation seeks to relate new program activities to the ever changing and increasingly complex patterns of our so ciety and to the multiple de mands it makes on women." Mrs. Culmer explained that as the girls grow older, they are encouraged to select serv ice activities of a near adult calibre requiring skills and attitudes essential to their de velopment as useful, creative women and as citizens of the world as well. - - - Although service to her community still plays a ma jor role in her activities, to day's Senior Scout is given a chance to explore wider fields of interest through participa tion in vocational conferences, art festivals, and national, and international events such as the 1956 and 1959 Senior roundups. . Some of the most vivid news reporting from the 1959 rounaup in Colorado was done by 1,300 girl correspond ents and commentators ac credited by their local news papers and radio stations, it is reported. The girls, were of fered training in a new area and . at the same time kept their own communities , in touch with a national event. Carolyn. Finch and Dianne Lewis were the two girls chos en from Medford to attend this event last year. P r o g r a mming for the younger girl encourages her to develop skills and service attitudes at her own , level. While the Senior Scout is serving as a hospital aide, tak ing voters to the polls, or assisting in forestry conserva tion, her younger Brownie or Intermediate sister is making scrapbooks or toys for mi grant workers' children, help ing her mother in household tasks or planting flowers and trees for public buildings. This flexibility in program ming at all levels has assisted the Girl Scouts to do their share in national or local emergencies such as the two world wars, floods or commu nity disasters, etc., it is stated. "Under more normal con ditions, however, Girl Scout program specialists plan ac tivities which will help de velop the girls as well-rounded individuals, and, above all, as happy women, the organi zation declares.
