Ted Williams Pat Professor Scottsdale, Ariz. - (UPD - Ted Williams today took on the title of "battling professor." He's going to try to teach some Boston Red Sox rookies how to power the ball out of the park as he's been doing for some 20 major league seasons. The 41 - year - old batting great is not giving up his own career as a player despite a chronic soreness in his neck. Red Sox Manager Billy Jurges, in announcing that Williams would take on addi tional chores as an instructor, said. "I want to stress this point - Ted will play as much as he can in his training pro gram hefe. I asked him to assist us with instructions of some of our young players, maybe five or six of them." Cherry City Bowl Schedules Rivalry : Salem (UPD The Cherry City Bowl in Salem has an- nounced that the All-Western Bowling tournament will commence April 23- Merchants of Salem have t responded to an advertising program and to date have con- tributed over $5000.00 in add- ed money. This added money E will be paid back to bowlers J in the prize fund of the handi- cap tournament. The tournament consists of four divisions including a 170 and over team event, a 170 Z nd under team event, worn wren's team and a mixed four t: some team event. Also in- - eluded are a doubles and i singles and warmup events. Sport- Car Club Meets Friday Siskiyou Sports Car club will hold a meeting on Friday March 4, at radio station KMED. Business session is to start at 8 p.m. Members will consider a proposed new constitution. Movies of local sports ' car events are to be shown. Mem bers are asked to bring along pp. interested friend. A "beginners" rally will be held by the club on Sunday, March 13, starting at 1 p.m. from Cubby's drive-in. Don Squire, activities chairman, said the rally should prove fun for experienced hands as well as new. It will be based on the game of poker. If weather permits, a picnic will follow the rally. TWENGE RESfGNS Corvallis -d'PD- An Oregon State assistant coach resigned to enter private business Tues day, while a former OSC cap tain was named an assistant coach at Iowa State. Dick Twenge, assistant here since 1954, resigned to join an in surance firm March 15. A successor has been picked but will not be announced until later. Athletic Director Spec Keene said. Dick Corrick, center and captain of the 1956 OSC team, was named an as sistant at Iowa State to Clay Stapleton, former OSC as sistant coach. Downey, dean of students, said Tuesday. Mickey Mantle Stays at Home Dallas (UPD -Mickey Man tle acted last night as if it doesn't make much difference whether he' plays for New York this year or not. The Yankee slugger made it plain in a television inter view that there's bad feeling between himself and the club and that he wouldn't mind too much being traded. While the Yankees opened spring training at St. Peters burg, Fla., Mantle stayed at his home in Dallas and offi cially became a holdout for the first time in his career. "A fellow who is a holdout naturally gets to be feeling a little bit bad toward the club," he said. Mantle and the Yankees have ben having a contract dispute reportedly over the club trying to cut the slug ger's salary by at - least $10,000. Ex-Convict Admits Use of Students Salem (UPD A young ex convict arrested Tuesday has admitted using high school students to pass bad checks at Woodburn and Oregon City. Charged with forgery and held in the Marion county jail was Patrick Leo Ball, 21, Woodburn. Police said he admitted sev eral forgeries and said each time high school students passed them for him.
