Air Force Training Manual Statements True, Off icial Says Washington (DPD - Chair man Francis E. Walter quoted Air Secretary Dudley. C. Sharp as telling the House Committee on Un-American Activities Thursday that all statements in a controversial Air Force training manual on C o m m u nist infiltration of churches were true. ; Walter said Sharp told com itttee members at a closed session that the manual was withdrawn, not because it was erroneous, but because the Air Force as a matter of policy felt it should not make charges involving specific groups. ; Walter said the manual, withdrawn by Sharp with an apology to the National Coun cil of Churches, now was be ing revised and would be re issued. Communism in Churches ; Sharp, himself, leaving the committee session flanked by half a dozen Air Force offi cers, referred questions on his testimony to Walter. Sharp confirmed that the tra ining manual, which among other things warned Air Force reservists to look for Communist influences in the church, was being "stud ied for possible revision" and indicated it probably would be reissued in revised form. As the session began, Walter gave newsmen his own open ing statement, charging that "large numbers of the clergy" as well as lay leaders of the church have been duped into supporting Communist fronts. Says Statements True "This is not to say that these persons are necessarily conscientiously supp o r t i n g Communist enterprises," Wal ter said, "but the net result is, for all practical purposes, the same." A Friday, Feb. 26, 1960 Poisoning Blamed For Death of Dogs Willamina, Ore. -(UPD- Wil lamina city officials said to day that the deaths of 15 dogs in the area recently have been attributed to strychnine poi-. soning. Police said the poison was put into hamburger and pack ages of the meat were dis tributed near roads. whether to go further into "the infiltration of Commu nism into religion." Walter described himself as satisfied with Sharp's testi mony, although he indicated he thought the Air Force was possibly a little timid in its approach. "The thing that disturbed the committee," Walter said, "was the intimation by the press that statements in the manual were not true, when of course they were true." "Admittedly, every thing contained in the manual was true," Walter said. Medford Students Make Showing at Speech Tourney Medford school students in speech won seven first places awards, 11 second places and seven third at the annual Tournament of Champions at Linfield college last week end. Fifty-seven senior students and junior high freshmen rep resented Medford. It was the largest speech squad at the contest and Medford's most successful year. Participants were divided into junior women and men and senior women and men, depending on previous expe rience in forensics. About 600 boys and girls from 40 schools in the state took part. EX-COMMANDER DIES ..' Philadelphia-flJPD-Maj. Gen. William G. Price Jr., 90, com mander of the Pennsylvania National Guard from 1919 to 1933, died Wednesday. Price won the Distinguished Serv ice Medal and the Croix de Guerre from both France and Belgium in World War I and later presided in France at a meeting at which the Ameri can Legion was formed.
