My sister is nuts she should go to a psychia trist. ; Mrs. L. K. - We don't want her stigmatized. 3 Judy K. I am a working girl of 20 and I am very much concerned about my 14-year-lId sister, Dorothy, who is be coming a problem child. - Dorothy is the most irre sponsible girl who ever lived. $he tells lies, plays hooky from school, never does any homework and. never takes care of her own clothes and things. When I was her age, I not only took care of my tlothes but hers and some times my mother's as well. - Now that Dorothy is old .enough to go out with boys I think she might get into se rious trouble. Sometimes I think she's really mentally off. I have been trying to get my parents to take her to a psychiatrist, but they won't do it. They're ashamed to ad mit she's nuts. . ' ' Mrs. L. K.-Dorothy is more fit a headache than Judy was at her age, but I'm not sure which of them is more of a headache right now. Some- limes I think Judy will drive me out of my mind with her screaming that Dorothy is a mental case and we'd better watch out. I feel that Judy makes Dorothy worse by constantly keeping after her for every .Tittle thing. Dorothy just wants to get out of the house and I don't blame her. It's true I think there is some thing to worry about as far as boys are concerned, but I don't think going to a psy chiatrist will stop her from anything. - My husband and I feel that Dorothy is just a kid and shouldn't have the stigma of being a mental case attached to her. ; The Council: We definitely agree that Dorothy should not be stigmatized as a mental case and we think the L.K.'s must insist that Judy stop re ferring to her sister in those terms. - The L.K.'s should also know that visiting a psychiatrist does not involve taking on any more of a stigma than going to any doctor. Thousands of people are under psychiatric treatment unknown to fam ily, friends and business as sociates. Whether or not Dorothy should go to one is, however, another matter. We do not think she should be dragged off to a psychiatrist against her will, but if she shows a desire to discuss her problems with a competent doctor, her parents should give her the opportunity. Our guess is that this doctor might be interest ed in having a chat with Sis ter Judy. The L.K.'s and Judy should be aware that Judy's role in this family drama reveals some distortions in her own personality. She is far too con cerned with her sister and her parents' problems with her sister. A young woman of Judy's age should be involved in too many of her own ac tivities to get mixed up in the bringing up of a kid sister. This is her parents' problem. The Biblical story of Cain and Abel dramatizes man's long history of brother ha tred. Judy imagines herself as taking on a good and con siderate role when she shows Overhulse Will Support Humphrey Portland (DPD State Sen. Boyd Overhulse, Madras, president of the Oregon Sen ate in 1957; has been added to the committee supporting the candidacy of Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D-Minn.) for the Democratic presidential nomi nation. . . Overhulse's support of Humphrey was announced by State Sen. William A. Gren fell Jr. and Rep. E. E. Bene dict, Portland, cochairman of the Multonomah county Humphrey committee. concern about her sister's problems, but she reveals her self as a Cain when she con demns her sister as "nuts." . Underneath is the desire to have her sister taken away or discounted as a Jiuman be ing a form of murder that has no legal consequences but is filled with emotional and moral meaning. Like many emotionally dis turbed individuals, Judy may be ashamed or afraid to ad mit that she would like to have some help. She may translate her own desire for help in terms of her sister's need. Innocent Plea Is Entered in Case Eugene Raymond Loebsack pleaded innocent in munici pal court yesterday to a charge of disorderly conduct resulting from a disturbance at the Crater hotel, 30 South Central a ve., Saturday. City police said that Loeb sack who gave his address as the Crater hotel, is also want ed in Portland on check charges and by the Missoula county sheriffs office in Mis soula, Mont., for forgery. City police went to the Crater hotel Saturday after receiving a report that a man was beating his wife at that location. When Loebsack saw police at the hotel, he ran out the door and down the street with officers in pursuit, they said. They apprehended him about a half block away from the hotel, they said, but Loeb sack put up a fight before sur rendering to officers and re portedly struck one of the of ficers several times. He was taken to city jail? and went before municipal judge Alan B. Holmes yester day where he entered his plea. Trial date has been set for Monday, Feb. 29. The first all-steel railway baggage car was introduced in 1904. ' " CAR GROWS ON BUS A station wagon seems to grow from a West Point, N.Y., bus after the larger vehicle hurtled off a curve in Bear Mountain State Park. The bus hit the parked station wagon, ending its plunge, and the car stuck in the bus when it was righted. Ten cadets and their driver, from West Point, were hospitalized. Gov. Edmund G. Brown, who touched" off the dispute by granting the reprieve Fri day, received hundreds of telegrams some praising and some condemning from throughout the world. Both the governor and the 38-year-old convict - author were hanged in effigy in Southern California. Bills Previously Defeated Brown granted the reprieve just 10 hours before Chess man was scheduled to die in the gas chamber for the crimes of robbery, kidnaping and rape. The governor said he want ed the legislature to have a chance to consider the aboli tion of capital punishment. The California Legislature has defeated similar bills on eight occasions - the latest in 1959. A United Press Internation al survey of the lawmakers indicated that majorities in each house of the legislature were opposed to abolition and to clemency for Chess man. For the moment, the strat egy of the abolition forces was uncertain. They were appar ently awaiting an expected conierence between tne gov ernor and Attorney General Stanley Mosk, both opponents of capital punishment. Cabbie Loses False Teeth To Holdup Pair Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. - Not only did his two youthful fares hold up the cab driver, they also took every stitch of his clothing, including his false teeth and $20 of his own money, both of which were stuffed in his clothes. The cabbie went to a near by back door and tapped on a window. The housewife, averting her eyes, handed him a burlap sack, exchanged later for a bathrobe. Later a police prowl car found the abandoned cab con taining the clothes and the hidden $20 bill. Tehe false teeth were missing. Twins Have Birthdays In Separate Months Clermont, N.C.-Mrs. John T. Brody's twins' birthdays fall in different months even though they were born only five minutes apart. Rita Marie arrived Oct. 31 at 11:57 p.m. and Rita's broth er, John, put in his appear ance at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1. The most important indus trial product of Chile is nitrate of soda. Although both Brown and Mosk are Democrats, the dis pute has divided, both politi cal parties. The abolition forces in clude State Director of Cor rections Richard McGee, mys tery writer Erie Stanley Gardner, psychiatrists, peno logists, rabbis and church groups. Those favoring the death penalty include the president pro tem of the state Senate, Hugh Burns (D-Fresno), Los Angeles District Attorney William McKesson, and var ious associations of district attorneys, sheriffs and police. The governor's mail-which ran 4-1 in favor of Chess man's reprieve and abolition prior to Friday - changed yes terday to a 50-50 split. Country Said Honored Among telegrams received was a congratulatory message from Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper. The mes sage read: "Your decision honors your country and Christian civili zation everywhere." But the mother of a rape victim (not Chessman's) told Brown, who earlier had com muted the death sentence of her attacker, that "for the second time you have put my daughter in a state of shock." Another writer simply wrote, "You, Sir, are an ap-plehead." New Pension Plan To Be Discussed The new federal pension act for veterans and their widows and children, the first major change in the law since 1933, will be described fully at a public meeting to be held at the VFW hall at 7 o'clock pjn. Thursday, Jackson Coun ty Veterans Service Officer Jerry V. Bianconi said. Veterans, widows and all others interested are invited to hear Shirley T. Brannock, contact representative at the Veterans Administration dom iciliary at Camp White, speak on the subject. Brannock will answer questions from the audience following his talk. "On March 1, all veterans and dependents presently re ceiving pension will be asked whether they wish to ex change their present benefits for pension under the new act," Bianconi said, "and the purpose of this meeting is to advise them fully so that they are better able to make the right decision." In addition, he said, many who expect to apply for a veterans or widows pension in the future will be interested in how this new act affects their entitlement. TRAFFIC DEATHS C h i c a g o The millionth U.S. traffic death occurred 52 years after the auto went into production. The two millionth death is expected in 13 more years.
