A Thursday, Feb. 18, 1960 Both Sides in Finch-Tregoff Trial To Rest Los Angeles (LTD The de fense and prosecution both were set to rest their cases to day in the murder trial of Dr. R. Bernard Finch and Carole Tregoff. The trial was not expected to j-each the seven-women, five man jury until late next week, however, because of a long week end recess until next Tuesday when closing arguments will begin. Swedish maid Marie Anne Lidholm was one of a few re buttal witnesses scheduled to testify in the windup of evi dence today. Her lengthy pre vious', testimony was the state's only eyewitness ac counts of events of July 18 when Mrs. Barbara Finch was killed. Stale Wants Death Wednesday lawyers for the "42-year-old doctor and his mistress conferred with Judge Walter Evans on his legal in structions to the jury. The prosecution has said it will seek the death penalty for both on charges of first de gree murder and conspiracy to murder. Assistant District Attorneys Fred Whichello and Clifford Crail were understood to have told Judge Evans they feel the only other verdicts be sides acquittal would be sec ond degree (unpremeditated) murder or manslaughter. Attorneys for Miss Tregoff said they object to any in structions on "included of fenses" for their client. They seek complete acquittal. Will Study Instructions But Grant Cooper, lawyer for the doctor, said he has suggested instructions for his client which would include lesser offenses such as assault with intent to commit mur der, assault with a deadly weapon to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Judge Evans planned to spend all of Friday studying his instructions. The trial will be in recess until Tuesday be cause of Washington's birth day on Monday. Should the jury return a verdict of first degree murder against either defendant, the trial will then resume with evidence and arguments on the severity of sentence. Then the jury would retire a second time to decide whether the penalty should be death in the gas chamber or imprison ment. Wall Street Chatter New York-dTD-The trouble with the market now is that although the downside risk for the moment does not ap pear too great, it remains dif ficult to enthuse about the upside potential, according to W. E. Hutton & Co. Stocks are becoming more immune to unfavorable news but reports from many basic industries that the rate of in coming orders is disappoint ing is not the type of thing which is stimulating, the firm points out. Impatient Lot "The small fraction of own ers of stocks who are largely responsible for the day to day fluctuations in prices are an impatient lot, on the whole. They have been spoiled in re cent years by having so many companies experience an un usual rate of growth," it says. These investors, the firm adds, are unimpressed with companies not growing at 15-to-20 per cent a year, and , with the so-called "growth" j companies which have be-: come so cyclical that they j have difficulty in putting two j good years back-to-back. j Purcell & Co. believes j Studebaker - Packard should ; be "basing out" at around cur rent levels. Notes that the Lark is selling well and that retail deliveries rose more . than 10 per cent in the last 10 , days of January over the pre- vious 10 days. ' Reynolds & Co. rates Ser vel an "interesting specula tion." The company is follow ing a growth-through acquisi tion program, the firm points out. Airport Earns More From Cars San Francisco - dPD - San Francisco International Air port earns more money from cars than from airplanes. Airport manager Belford Brown reported that during the past fiscal year, autos brought in-$1,235,000 while aircraft landing and takeoff fees netted only S950.000. Auto fees included $650,000 for parking, S410.000 from car rental concessions and $175,000 from taxi and limou sine operators.
