FOX Los Aneeles -(CPA- The most . fascinating character in the spectacular that is the Finch Tregoff murder trial is not the youthful looking doctor or his statuesque mistress. It is the lawyer for Dr. R. m Bernard Finch - Grant Coop- er. Cooper appears to have won ; the jury completely. Not per haps to the extent they will '. acquit the surgeon. But they r will think a long time about - handing a setback to likeable, .'affable, gentlemanly Grant . Cooper. Cooper Shapes Pattern Tuesday at the trial he was trying to establish the date of . a boating trip. The witness ' said it was Father's Day. ' Cooper appealed to the court room at large: "Does anyone .know when Father's Day is?" And two of the jurors quickly replied it was June 21. Attorneys conferred with the judge on his instructions to the jury. After this, he is the un doubted successor to ailing and aging Jerry Giesler as the lawyer to the Hollywood stars. Three of Giesler's associates represent Miss Tregoff. But they are so overshadowed by Cooper that the prosecution has complained that Cooper is defending Carole more than her own attorneys. Not Very Smart It was he who persuaded them to put her on the witness stand. She did not come off too well. She fell back on "I don't knows" and "I was just frozen." She is not very smart and she might have been far better off never testifying. it's delicious as a cocktail . . . and wonderfully refreshing after dinner. Air Force Secretary Dud ley C. Sharp announced the manual had been withdrawn from use Feb. 11 but said a full scale injuiry will be made to find out who was respon sible for the publication. In Congress, Rep. John E Moss (D-Calif.), chairman of tne House freedom of in formation subcommittee, or dered his investigators to "gather every f a c t." .. He termed the manual as "an out-' rageous display of arrogance." Sharp in his statement "categorically repudiated" the viewpoint of the manual which had brought a vehem ent protest from the National Council of Churches. May Hold Hearings He said that in addition to finding out the individuals responsible for the publica tion, the Air Force will inves tigate its other publications to see if similar information is being carried. Moss told United Press In ternational his group may hold hearings on the situation. "We want to know who wrote it. We want to know who ap proved it and we want to know its distribution," he said. Defense Secretary Thomas S. Gates Jr. was reported "startled and stunned" at the contents of the "manual. Sharp said that he acted im mediately on learning of the existence of the manual Tues day evening. He found that Air Force headquarters had directed withdrawal of the document last Thursday, the day the church council sent a letter of protest to Gates. Used as a text for a training course for noncommissioned officers in the Air Force Re serve, the manual contained these quotes: -"Communists and Commu nist fellow-travelers have suc cessfully infiltrated our churches." Pastors Said Communists "It is well known that even the pastors of certain of our churches are card-carrying Communists." -"The National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. officially sponsored the revised standard version of the Bible. Of the 95 persons who served on this project, 30 have been affiliated with pro Communists fronts, projects and publications." "Another foolish remark often heard is that Americans have a rieht to know what's going on. Most people realize the foolishness of such a sug gestion." 'Keen in mind that nublic news media present only as much information as the gov ernment wants to release." And as a scientific achievement, it probably is outpaced only by the taming of nuclear engery, Yet it has been made clear in the controversy now raging in Congress that in these most complex weapons in the his tory of warfare Russia is out producing the United States. Democrats and Republicans agree on that. Democrats say the United States could be in mortal peril over the next few years as a result. Republicans say that other weapons will offset the Russian missile su periority, and that there will be no gap in American power to deter war. Russia leads in missile pro duction for two reasons. It started developing ballistic missiles years ahead of this country. After the thermonu clear break-through in 1953' 54 pointed the way to develop ment of light weight war heads, the United States em barked on a hurry-up program to develop ballistic missiles. Military men believe this country no longer lags in quality. The lag in numbers is a matter of deliberate choice, the administration preferring to await development of an advanced ICBM, the minute- man, before producing vast numbers. The U.S. ballistic missile program: -The Atlas ICBM. The first U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile. Now operational in the hands of troops at Van denberg Air Force Base, Calif. A second squadron will be come operational at Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, Wyo., this spring. Thirteen squadrons are planned over the next two years. Civil Rights Fight Goes to Committeee Washington (UPD - Civil rights backers shifted their efforts to the Senate Rules Committee today in hope of winning approval of legisla tion to guarantee Negro vot ing rights. Chairman Thomas C. Hen nings Jr. (D-Mo.) called a meeting of the rules group to consider the voting rights proposals. But there was no certainty of action today. The Senate was scheduled to convene early to plow ahead with its overall civil rights debate which brought three test votes during a nine hour session Tuesday. Amendments Invitad The official business before the Senate is an unrelated minor bill, affecting a Stella, Mo., school district. But sen ators have been invited to make it a civil rights vehicle by attaching amendments. Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R-N.Y.) pro-civil rights mem ber of the rules committee, predicted there was enough support in the nine-member group to , approve a voting rights proposal. It is about a year be hind the Atlas in develop ment. The only American bal listic missile ever to perform perfectly on its first flight test. It has had four success ful flights, and three failures none of which was related to the missile itself but rather was connected with test de vices. Test Flights To Start -Minuteman ICBM. A rapid-firing, solid - fueled, three stage rocket. Due to enter service in 1963 and to be in stalled in both underground launching sites and on special Strategic Air Command rail road trains. Test flights should start this year. -Polaris. A two-stage, solid fueled missile to be carried aboard nuclear submarines and described by President Eisenhower as "impossible to destroy by surprise attack." With a range of 1,200 miles, the Polaris is due to go to sea aboard the submarine George Washington late this year. Twelve such submarines are currently planned. In its last five test firings, irom cape Canaveral, Fla., Polaris has hit the bull's eye. -Thor and Jupiter. Inter mediate 1,500-mile range bal listic missile. Not being em ployed by U.S. forces. Mot Blocked Tuesday, southern Demo crats blocked a move ' by Keating to get the judiciary committee to act on long stalled civil rights legislation. Sen. Olin D. Johnston (D S.C.) objected to Heating's motion for approval of a seven-point administration bill. Johnston argued that the committee could not legally sit while the Senate was in session.
