(Knackstedt Photo) Hatfield Says Dedication To Moral issues Needed Spokane-fliPD - Oregon Gov ernor Mark O. Hatfield said Saturday materialism and "dollars themselves" will not save the country and called for dedication to moral prin ciples. Speaking at an overflow Lincoln day gathering, the 38-vear-old Hatfield said sur vival of the country against totaliarian assault depends on its stand on moral issues, its spirit, and its dedication. "We are on a moral cam paign," he said, "and our pur pose is moral vitality. We will have to sfend up and be count ed for our moral positions." Commenting on the admin istration's missile program, the youthful-looking governor said he was surprised to see so many political authorities although most of them are more political than authorita tive. "The President can better evaluate the situation," he said, adding that he himself was not an authority. Hatfield said he believed Adlai Stevenson would get the Democratic nomination for the presidency, though he said he thought Lyndon Johnson would be a tougher opponent for Richard Nixon, whom Hatfield said will get the GOP nod. ' . He also lashed, out at weak nesses in -welfare programs, which he said in many cases made it more profitable for a person to stay -on welfare than to work. Richard , L. Neuberger said Saturday. The damage was caused when the Canadian vessels were en route to Portland for the Rose Festival. Sen. Neuberger said the Army Engineers told him the projects were designed to al leviate the threat of levee breaching or destruction. England's Puritan Parlia ment abolished Christmas celebrations and suppressed Christmas carols in 1647. Pomona Grange The January meeting of Jackson County Pomona Grange drew a large crowd to the Eagle Point Grange hall, including visitors Mr. and Mrs. Burgess from Greenhorn Grange, Yreka. Officers ab sent were Assistant Steward Chet Wendt,. Gatekeeper Her man Kamping, Pomona Wil lie McLean, Flora Pearl Byrn ne, Executive Committeeman Delmar Smith, and Musician Frieda Smith. ' Lecturer Mabel Wertz re ported there would be no lec ture schools this year. In stead, eight conferences will be held in the state. Of im portance to subordinate lec turers is a series of four class es to be held in the Medford YMCA March 1, 8, 15, and 23 to train leaders in recreation and games. Lecturers are urged to attend the course. HEC chairman Cassie Gold ing announced that the HEC conference had been post poned to Feb. 11 and was held in the Gold Hill Grange hall. She stated an HEC planning meeting would be held at each Grange council meeting which subordinate HEC chair men should plan to attend. Reports of committee chair men indicated farmer income is expected to average about the same for 1960 as 1959, but livestock prices are rising. Condemnation of best of sprays and insecticides by the food and drug administration is making it difficult for the farmer, and increased produc tion costs are rising too high for orchardists. It was announced that the following officers of the Jack son County Grange Council were elected in January: President, Orie Moore, Roxy Ann; vice president, Mabel Wertz, Eagle Point, and secre tary, Irene Culy, Upper Ap plegate Grange. Next council meeting will be April 9 at Roxy Ann Grange at 8 p.m. The lecture hour opened with a talk by Dr. Leonard Mayfield, superintendent of Medford schools, on his re cent trip to Russia. The program was conclud ed with two pantomines by Sonia Batz, two duets by Mer rill and Delvin Ford, and a skit by members of the Eagle Point Grange During the business meet ing, it was voted to give cash prizes in a membership con- test of the Suburdmate Granges. The resignation of Secretary Lesbia Lattie was read and accepted. Eda Tor rance of Upper Rogue Grange was elected to fill the balance of her term and was installed by County Deputy Roscoe Roberts. Frank Hall of Live Oak Grange was reappointed dele gate from Jackson County Pomona Grange to. the Rogue Basin Flood Control and Water Resources association. It was reported that the county Grange day had been named the "Jackson County Grange Festival" and will be held July 30. There will be games for young and old and D-Days ! In the evening, skits from each county Grange will compete for cash prizes at the Eagle Point grade school gymnasium. There will be dancing in the Eagle Point Grange hall. Next meeting of the festi val planning committee will be Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Central Point Grange .hall. All interested Grangers are invited to attend. Christerson, secre tary to the Oregon state board o f engineering examiners, will speak on changes in the engineering registration law at a meeting of the Rogue Valley Section of the Profes- Officers Seek Man For Rape, Car Theft Portland , (DPD Multno mah county authorities were looking for a man accused of rape, kidnap and car theft here Friday. Mrs. Charlotte Lane told sheriff's officers that the man had raped and kidnaped her house guest using her car. The victim, Jean Adamson, 22, later showed up and said the man had taken her to Van couver in the stolen car and then returned her to Port land and put her out three blocks from the Lane home. sional Engineers of Oregon, at 7 p.m., Feb. 15 at Kim's res taurant. He is also manager of the wood preserving department, Pope and Talbot, Inc., Portland, Ore., an engineer said. "The meeting will start En gineering Week activities for the local section," according to President R. L. . Adams, Myrtle Creek. This is an an nual activity, centered around Washington's birthday and used to promote the engineer ing profession, he explained. The theme is "The Engineer's Great Challenge - The 1960s."
