Hatfield Says Dedication
To Moral issues Needed
Spokane-fliPD - Oregon Gov
ernor Mark O. Hatfield said
Saturday materialism and
"dollars themselves" will not
save the country and called
for dedication to moral prin
ciples.
Speaking at an overflow
Lincoln day gathering, the
38-vear-old Hatfield said sur
vival of the country against
totaliarian assault depends
on its stand on moral issues,
its spirit, and its dedication.
"We are on a moral cam
paign," he said, "and our pur
pose is moral vitality. We will
have to sfend up and be count
ed for our moral positions."
Commenting on the admin
istration's missile program,
the youthful-looking governor
said he was surprised to see
so many political authorities
although most of them are
more political than authorita
tive.
"The President can better
evaluate the situation," he
said, adding that he himself
was not an authority.
Hatfield said he believed
Adlai Stevenson would get
the Democratic nomination for
the presidency, though he said
he thought Lyndon Johnson
would be a tougher opponent
for Richard Nixon, whom
Hatfield said will get the GOP
nod. ' .
He also lashed, out at weak
nesses in -welfare programs,
which he said in many cases
made it more profitable for a
person to stay -on welfare
than to work.
