MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. C Thursday, Feb. 11, 1960 " In the Days News By FRANK JENKINS The aspirin people who have never been accused of being AWOL when the busi ness brains were being por tioned out - have come up with a Jigger enabling the un-der-the-weather customer to put a coin in the slot and take out two aspirins in a neat little plastic package that unfolds into a drinking cup. That's progress. In these modern days, which are full of problems, nothing comes in handier than aspirin. 1 Mzzi ORE progress: Americans have forged ahead of the British in a field where the British once ruled the roost. The field is TUR- BITS. What'i a turbit? A turbit is a pigeon with a very short beak. Because of its short beak, the baby turbit can't reach into its parent's beak to get food, as the ordi nary pigeon does. So the tur bit fanciers mate two turbits and two long-beaked birds of another breed. When the eggs are laid, the breeders switch them. Thus long-beaked par ents bring up the turbits and short-beaked turbit parents bring up the long-b e a k e d youngsters. The British were once far out in front of us in the turbit business, but this cross-breed ing device has enabled us to forge away out in front of them. Co- J Let's not lose faith in our country. We may be short on missiles, but we're long on turbits. "PEPORTS from trained ob- servers in the Dominican Republic (down in the trou bled Caribbean) indicate that the Trujillo regime is facing its most serious crisis in its 30 years of despotic rule. Good news? It could be, but probably Isn't. Cuba's experience sug gests that when one despot throws out another despot the No. 2 despot is apt to be worse than the No. 1 despot. 1I7HAT ahall we do about It? ' Why not fall back on the Monroe Doctrine - which forbids the establishment by Old World nations of a foot hold in the Western Hemis phere? Communism may not be a foreign NATION, in the strictest diplomatic sense of the word, but it is a foreign ideology - and ideologies can be dangerous when they are utterly foreign to everything wt believe in. AS THIS is written, it's snowing cats and dogs and Plymouth Rock roosters, to borrow an antiquated but expressive idiom. Are we down-hearted? " NO! NO! A thousand times no! It's filling up the reservoirs with water - and here in the State of Jefferson water is modern GOLD. Roseburg Board j OKs Rebuilding Roseburg - (UPD - The Rose burg Urban Renewal Board has approved recommenda tions of a 70-member advis ory council to get on with the rebuilding of blast-shattered downtown Roseburg. The advisory council Wed nesday night said the city could not wait for a federal decision about restoring the downtown area destroyed in a dynamite-truck explosion last year. Chairman Ralph De Moisey said, "we are convinced that we can rebuild and modern ize our own community bet ter and faster without help from the Federal govern ment." The board also approved a low-level bridge over the North Umpqua river which would make rebuilding of the downtown area easier. HALLECK EYES POST St. Paul, Minn.-OJPD-House Minority Leader Charles Hal leck said Wednesday he thinks he has a good chance of being the next House speaker. Halleck said that if the GOP doesn't capture the House in the November elec tion "we'll be real close. We have a fighting chance to win." If the Republicans do win, he said, he expects to be speaker. 4,000 Restaurants Prove it Every Day i.
