B Thursday, Fb. 11, 1960 Bulletin Helps Woodland Owners Identify Quality Corvallis - If you'rs going to sell or buy timber, It's com mon sense to know both the quantity and quality of the timber you're talking about. A new bulletin prepared by the Oregon State college ex tension service helps wood land owners and timber buy ers do that. Titled, "Measur ing Trees." the new bulletin uses examples, tables, and il lustrations to help readers lparn how to measure the potential wood products on timber lands. To determine the volume of products in a woodland, an inventory or "cruise" must be made. This inventory will dm the owner or buyer the volume and quality of sale- -wr Tirnrtiirtjs in terms 01 nuiv hoar A feet for saw logs or peelers, in cords for pulpwood or fuelwood, and in pieces ior poles, piling and posts. Then, by knowing the cur rent prices for different sizes these timber products, the owner can de cide which ones to sen 10 make the most money. Quantity Quality Woodland owners need to know the quantity and quality f their timber for best man agement as well as to make the best selling decisions, me bulletin points out. Timber is a crop, and like other crops will grow better on good land under good management. The bulletin tells readers how to lay out timber plots, how to measure individual trees and groups of trees, use aerial photographs, and meas ure cut timber. Tables are in cluded so use can be made of special measuring scales and instruments. Prepared by Gary H.
