Or. rhunday, Feb. 11. 1960 -3!l Milk Sampling Shows Increase In Strontium 90 Washington (Science Serv ice) The strontium-90 levels in milk samples went up dur ing October in all but the Atlanta station of the 12-sta- tion network, the U.S. Public Health Service reported here. The levels of radioactivity In the October samples con tinued the fluctuating pattern that has prevailed from the beginning of the study in 1957. At the St. Louis station, the strontium 90 count was 25.1 micro - microcuries per liter. It was 15.0 in Septem ber. The strontium-90 measure ment at Fargo (N.D.) Moor head (Minn.) station was 11.4 in October compared with 8.1 in September. In the Chicago area, there was an increase from 5.2 in September to 10.1 in October. May Be Repetition U.S. PHS suggested that these increases may be a repetition of the pattern ob served during the fall of 1957 and 1958. They may also be related to the customary change in farm practices from pasture to barn feeding dur ing the fall and winter montlis. The National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements considers that undue risks to the population will not be incurred by con tinuing to use the value of 80 micro-microcuries per liter as a guide to whole population exposure. A curie is a meas ure of radioactivity equiva lent to that produced by one gram of radium, and a micro microcurie is one millionth of a millionth of a curie. Below Permissable Level Both the monthly levels and the long-term averages for all radioactive isotopes analyzed in the milk samples collected in October from all stations remained below the levels that the committee con siders permissable for life time exposure by the general population. The milk sampling network is part of the Service's pro gram of measurement of ra dioactivity in air, water and food. Milk rat chosen for the initial study of specific iso topes in foods because it is the most practical to sample and is produced throughout the year in all sections of the country. Cornell Family Not Member of Board Ithaca, N. Y. -fliPD- For the first time since Cornell Uni versity was founded in 1865, its Board of Trustees does not include a member of the Cor nell family but that's not because there isn't one around. The university's charter provides that the oldest lineal male descendant of Ezra Cor nell must always be a mem ber of the board. The Cornell currently qualifying is "the founder's great - great - great -grandson and namesake, but he's only 12 years old . Since New York State law prohibits a minor from serv ing as trustee, young Ezra -and Cornell University-must wait until his 21st birthday on Nov. 17, 1969. before he can assume the post. Plant Has Trouble Seeing Product Cleveland, Ohio (UPD In dustrial Electronic Rubber Co. here turns out its products on a mass-production basis but it has a hard time seeing what it it doing. The company makes tiny precision rubber parts-"mi-cro-miniature," they're called. Its factory is a converted private house whose living room now serves as the cen tral office. The "rubbermill"is housed in what was a garage. The "fabricating' division is in the dining room and other rooms are used for inspection nd research. . Although the firm is small and the seals and caps it turns out even smaller, production is about 1,000,000 pieces a month. The employees are mostly housewives.
