Tornado Hoopsters Trim Crater 73-37 SOUTHERN' OREGON' CONFERENCE STANDINGS Medford 10 o 1.000 Klamath Falls 6 3 .667 Crater 4 6 .400 Grants Pass 4 6 .400 Ashland 0 9 .000 Smashing Comet resistance with a barrage of eight field goals and four free tosses in the last 4V2 minutes of the second quarter, the Medford high basketball contingent bounced Crater 73 to 37 here Saturday night in a Southern Oregon conference skirmish. It was the 10th successive league victory for Medford which is unmarred in District 6 A-l. The' Black Tornado stretched to a 3-game mar gin over second place Klamath Falls which rested Saturday after dropping a Friday hassle to the go-go Medfordites. Cra ter (4-6) fell back into a dead lock with Grants Pass which ramped 67 to 35 over Ashland high. Saturday's scuffle was still a close ball game after three minutes of the second panel had passed. Medford headed at that point just 15 to 13, having encountered stiff Com et defense. Then Jerry Shults pushed in a long shot and two free tosses. Dick Ragsdale flipped t WATCH FOR IT! LISTEN FOR IT! Medford's top line re serves, Booth Deakins and Bob Quinney, next got in on the scoring act. Each goaled from the field three times. At half time the count was 35 to 13. The Tornado put in nine field shots in 17 tries and had 24 points in the second quar ter while holding Crater to six markers on three field buckets. Two to one (54 to 28) con trol of the backboards and .453 field shooting to Crater's .211 told a good share of the story of the fracas which Medford took with balanced opera iiori. Deakins with 15 and Shults with 14 were Med ford's high point men. Jerry Anderson of Medford and Denny Edwards of the Com ets each had a 10-counter. Quinney was top rebound man with nine. Anderson, Shults, and Lowell Dean each snared seven and Ragsdale and Cal Dean each six for Medford. Edwards had nine retrieves and Chuck Turner eight for Crater. The Tornado had an 11 to 7 quarter gap and was ahead 54 to 22 after three periods of play. It had spreads of 39 points three times in the clos ing quarter. J The Big Wind took a 7 to 0 lead in the fuss on a free toss by Shults and three field baskets by Anderson. Crater never caught up in the game but hacked the difference to 7 to 5 with 2V2 minutes to go in the panel. Cooper's hook goal and free heave and two charity chances by Turner got the points. Medford upped to 11 to on Lowell Dean's pusher and Anderson's driver bucket. Ed wards close the canto for Crater with two free throws and Dave Sharp sank a push er for the Comets to slice the gap to 11 to 9. Dean pushed in another bucket but Turner hit from lone range for 13 to 11. Anderson's two gifter shots were offset by Sharp's push for 15 to 13. After that it was a Medford show. All five starters hit in double figures, a famous first for this year's basketball club. Gordy Carrigan led the way with 19 points, followed by John Payne with 16, Brad Flannery with 14, Dick Smith with 12, and Dave Gardner with 11. Eastern Oregon did almost as well with four players in double totals. Pasco Arritola copped top honors with 20 points. Washington Trips Troy United Press International Let's skip the Asian flu and look out for an epidemic of upsets which could give any coach chills and fever, espe cially if he is on the West Coast. The year's biggest stunner was turned in Saturday night at Los Angeles where lowly Washington rose up and knocked the props from under Southern California 59-49. It was the second straight blow for the Trojans, who fell be fore Stanford on Friday night in double overtime, 82-71. Santa Clara zoomed into second place in the West Coast Athletic conference with a routine 65-41 beating of San Jose State. Loyola defeated the Univer sity of San Francisco, 54-43, with a second half rally. Fresno State continued to streak toward the California Collegiate Athletic associa tion diadem by thumping Cal Poly, 77-67,. IV Wins 55-33 Over Bulldogs Talent-Illinois Valley high took a non-league basketball victory by 53 lo 33 over Tal ent at Cave Junction on Sat urday evening. IV had 21 to 19 half time and 33 to 25 third quarter gaps after an 11-all first can to tie. Mike Hanby had 15 points, Doug Lewis 12 and Terry Johnson 11 for the Cougars and Tom Johnson scored 10 for Talent. Talent was 37 to 27 winner in the junior varsity scrape. Loggers Down Chiefs 51-43 . Rogue River Butte Falls high downed Rogue River 51 to 43 here Saturday in non league basketball. The Loggers had 11 to 4 first quarter lead but Rogue River headed at halftime 24 to 20. Butte Falls went ahead again 32 to 29 in the third quarter. Jeff LeRoy scored 19 points for the home Chief tains and Raymond Abbott 17 for Butte Falls. Rogue River won the jay vee mix 52 to 36. Owens Praises High Jump Star Boston - (UPD - Jesse Owens, probably the greatest track star the United States has ever produced, says high jumper John Thomas is "one of the most superb athletes I have ever seen." The accolade from Owens came shortly after the 18-year-old Thomas high jumped 7 feet IV2 inches at the BAA meet here Saturday night to equal the world mark he established only one week be fore. Holmes then hit two jumpers for EOC to give it a lead. EOC stayed ahead most of the early part of the initial stanza. The Raiders finally pulled ahead for good. Payne shot a jumper to tie the count at 11-22 and Flan ary hit a field shot and a free throw to put the Raiders in front by 14-11. Lead at Half " Two jumpers by Gardner and a pair of gifters gave the Raiders a 19-13 bulge. They took the halftime break with a 38-34 lead. SOC pushed the advantage to 61-48 before falling victim to a splurge by the Mounties. Before five minutes had elapsed the Mounties had cut the lead to 65-61 but baskets by Carrigan, Payne, and Gard ner put the Raiders too far out of reach. EOC out - rebounded the Raiders 51-49 but Smith cap tured 16 missed shots to add to his total of 19 from the night before for a season rec ord of 35 in a two-game series. As a team the Raiders hit 29 of 70 field shots for 41.4 per cent, while the Mounties hit 25 of 60 and a percentage of 41.8. From the gift line EOC held the advantage 22-17. BOX: East. Ore. Arnold Palmer Desert Winner Palm Springs, Calif. - (UPD -Arnold Palmer nabbed a three-stroke victory Sunday in the Desert Classic golf tour ney here. The 30-year-old Palmer shot a final round 65 on the par 36-35-71 Thunderbird course. His 90-hole total on the four courses in this tourney was 338-20 below par. Arnold took the lead away from another Palmer, unre lated Johnny, a 41-year-old pro from Tulsa, Okla., who led going into the final round. Johnny had a final round 70 and a 90-hole total of 342 good for a third place tie with Bob Goalby. Second place and $6,600 went to Fred Hawkins. His 90 hole total was 341. OSC Nicks Webfoots Corvallis (UPD Oregon State's Jim Woodland sank two. free throws with 20 sec- j onds remaining in the game here Saturday night to give the Beavers a 55-54 victory over Oregon. Oregon won Friday night, 63-53. Oregon tried for a last sec ond shot but Guard Chuck Rask lost the ball with eight seconds left and Oregon State stalled it out. The Ducks had come from behind to tie the score at 37 37 with 15 minutes left in the game after trailing 32-26 at halftime. They finally took the lead with 1:08 left at 54 53 on Rask's driving layin. Oregon State's Karl Ander son did a good defensive job on Oregon's main offensive weapon, Glenn Moore, limit ing him to three points. An derson also took off 14 of Oregon State's 64 rebounds.
