Smashing Comet resistance
with a barrage of eight field
goals and four free tosses in
the last 4V2 minutes of the
second quarter, the Medford
high basketball contingent
bounced Crater 73 to 37 here
Saturday night in a Southern
Oregon conference skirmish.
It was the 10th successive
league victory for Medford
which is unmarred in District
6 A-l. The' Black Tornado
stretched to a 3-game mar
gin over second place Klamath
Falls which rested Saturday
after dropping a Friday hassle
to the go-go Medfordites. Cra
ter (4-6) fell back into a dead
lock with Grants Pass which
ramped 67 to 35 over Ashland
high.
Saturday's scuffle was still
a close ball game after three
minutes of the second panel
had passed. Medford headed
at that point just 15 to 13,
having encountered stiff Com
et defense.
Then Jerry Shults pushed
in a long shot and two free
tosses. Dick Ragsdale flipped

in a pair of gifters. Shults
sank a long pusher for 23 to
13. Medford's top line re
serves, Booth Deakins and
Bob Quinney, next got in on
the scoring act. Each goaled
from the field three times. At
half time the count was 35 to
13. The Tornado put in nine
field shots in 17 tries and had
24 points in the second quar
ter while holding Crater to
six markers on three field
buckets.
Two to one (54 to 28) con
trol of the backboards and
.453 field shooting to Crater's
.211 told a good share of the
story of the fracas which
Medford took with balanced
opera iiori. Deakins with 15
and Shults with 14 were Med
ford's high point men. Jerry
Anderson of Medford and
Denny Edwards of the Com
ets each had a 10-counter.
Quinney was top rebound
man with nine. Anderson,
Shults, and Lowell Dean each
snared seven and Ragsdale
and Cal Dean each six for
Medford. Edwards had nine
retrieves and Chuck Turner
eight for Crater.
The Tornado had an 11 to
7 quarter gap and was ahead
54 to 22 after three periods
of play. It had spreads of 39
points three times in the clos
ing quarter. J
The Big Wind took a 7 to
0 lead in the fuss on a free
toss by Shults and three field
baskets by Anderson. Crater
never caught up in the game
but hacked the difference to
7 to 5 with 2V2 minutes to
go in the panel. Cooper's hook
goal and free heave and two
charity chances by Turner got
the points.
Medford upped to 11 to
on Lowell Dean's pusher and
Anderson's driver bucket. Ed
wards close the canto for
Crater with two free throws
and Dave Sharp sank a push
er for the Comets to slice the
gap to 11 to 9. Dean pushed
in another bucket but Turner
hit from lone range for 13 to
11. Anderson's two gifter
shots were offset by Sharp's
push for 15 to 13. After that
it was a Medford show.
The Comets 'went for 634
minutes without scoring and
for 9Vi minutes with just one
goal in stretches overlapping
the second and third quarters.
