Sunday, Feb. 7, 1960 Instrument Loss Delays X-15 Test Edwards Air Force Base, Calif- -0H- The X-15 manned rocketship was carried aloft tethered to a giant B-52 bomb er Thursday for its fifth pow ered flight, but a loss of in strument power caused post ponement of the test Test" pilot Scott Crossfield who has guided the sleek 50 foot craft in all its glide and power", flights noticed instruments-were not functioning. The craft was kept fastened to its mother ship and stayed aloft for a captive flight to collect further research data. Cause of the power failure was not announced by North American Aviation, manufac turer of the craft which is ex pected to carry man 100 miles up at speeds of about 4,000 miles an hour. Thorn ton, special agent in charge of the Portland FBI office. Thornton will speak on the continuing auto theft prob lem as it exists today through out the nation. If the 1958" rate continues approximately 9 million automobiles will be stolen within the next genera tion, the FBI said. Law enforcement officers and persons whose work is closely related to the auto mobile business will be in vited to attend open forums and panel discussions. Parti cipants .will include officers from rural areas, metropoli tan areas and state and fed eral officers, who will ex change suggestions, ideas and experiences. This is one of a series of such conferences which start in Ontario, Ore., on Feb. 9. Others scheduled include Pen dleton, Feb. 11, Coos Bay, Feb. 16, and Portland, Feb. 24. Aim of the conferences is to give officers and people in the auto industry a better understanding of the coopera tive services available from all those interested -in com bating the auto theft problem. "One of the most -important things learned from the pre vious conferences was that the car theft problem is common to all law enforcement agen cies, whether large or small, and can best be solved through cooperative efforts," the FBI said. Jubilee Year of Boy Scouts Will Be Observed Here Celebration of the jubilee year of the Boy Scouts of America will begin during Boy Scout week Feb. 7 to 13 in the Crater Lake Council with activities ranging from a window . display contests to recognition dinners, Dr. Billy D. Blackstone, chairman of the Big Pines district com mittee, has announced. The 50th anniversary of the national Scout organiza tion is Monday, Feb. 8. Pres ent membership of the Boy Scouts of America is more than 5 million with nearly 6,000 members in the local three - county Scout council which serves Jackson, Jose phine, and Siskiyou counties. Window displays are a ma jor feature for Boy Scout week, and judging of the dis plays has been completed by a committee headed by Jack Holmes of Medford. The Big Pines district will hold an adult recognition din ner Saturday, Feb. 20, for all adults connected with the 67 Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, and Explorer posts in Jackson county. The traditional rededication to the Scout oath will be fea tured on Monday over KMED at 6:30 p.m. and on KBES TV at 6:05 p.m. Officers and committee chairmen of the Big Pines district, in addition to Dr. Blackstone, are Harry Barker and Howard Wiley, vice chair men; Robert Wobbe, district commissioner; R. E. Culbert son, activities; Dr. Abner O. Clark, advancement; Joseph Walsh, camping; John Wat kins, finance; Dr. Douglas Philips, health and safety; Carl Olson, leadership train ing; and Wayne Struble, or ganization and extension. Trouble was, the lady driver was about to hit him. Getting out of the way, he bit his whistle too hard and broke a right front tooth in two places. OLDEST GENERAL DIES Parris Island, S. C. - (UPD -Major Gen. Randolph C. Ber keley, 85, a Medal of Honor winner who was the oldest general in the Marine Corps, died Sunday of a heart ail ment. Berkeley had retired in 1939 after 41 years of Ma rine service. Scout week, Feb. 7 to 13. Children's Li brarian Miss Julie Keiser shows them a rack of merit badge pamphlets that covers over 100 subjects. Several Scout members helped sellect the books. Branch libraries in Jackson county will also get books on Scouting and related subjects, according to Librarian Omar Bacon. Dentists Named as Meeting Delegates Eight valley dentists were selected to attend the coming annual meeting of the Oregon State Dental association at a monthly meeting of the Southern Oregon District Dental Society last week. The state meeting will be in Portland March 7, 8 and 9. Selected as delegates were Drs. Claude Lewis, Lee Mellish, W. H. Roberts, John Dickson, Dan Engle,. R. J. Camden and Scott Ellis. Dickson, Med ford dentist, left Thursday for Chicago, where he will attend meetings of the Congress on Dental Education and Licen sure sponsored by the Coun cil of Dental Education of the American Dental association, it was reported. Dr. Dickson is a member of the Oregon State Board of Dental Examiners. He will at tend, also, a seminar at North western university dental school sponsored by the Amer ican .' Association of Dental Examiners and a seminar of the National Board of Dental Examiners. Vaughan, who formerly worked on Civil War projects in Wisconsin, said that sev eral persons around the coun try had been asked to give volunteer service to properly commemorate the historic days of 1861-1865. Smoking Habits Said Unchanged London - (CPD - The British medical journal Lancet said today that the intensive pub licity about the alleged harm ful effects of smoking has not changed people's smoking habits much. Lancet based its conclusion on a survey conducted in Edinburgh, Scotland. It said that despite a sweeping anti smoking campaign in the city, the proportion of non-smokers did not increase, and the ratio of heavy smokers to light smokers remained unchanged.
