Friday, Jan. 29, 1960 Activities Told For Zion Lutheran Break Predicted in Sydney Heat Wave Sydney, Australia UPD A break was predicted today in the heat wave which has claimed at least 22 lives in New South Wales. The mercury soared over the 100 degree mark for the fourth straight day Thursday - Sydney had a high of 103. The heat and humidity felled 'COPTER CRASH FATAL Williamsburg, Va. -4JP1I- An Army reconnaisance helicop ter crashed in woods on a farm near here Thursday night and two men aboard were killed. The victims were CWO Harry J. Limerick, 32, East Riverdale, Md., and Pfc. Edward E. Cutler, 25, Cass City, Mich. SERMON TOPIC The Rev. Elvin S. Tollef son of Ascension Lutheran church, 2501 Barnett rd., will use as his sermon subject Sun day morning, "Faith and Prayer." The boys' chorus from Hoover school will sing under the direction of Mrs. Marjorie Blaar. The church council will meet Monday at 8 p.m. "Remember Jesus Christ" will be the sermon subject Sunday at Zion Lutheran church, Fourth st. and North Oakdale ave. The Rev. H. C. Coovert will give the sermon. Both senior and junior choirs will furnish music. Also on Sunday the Junior Luther league will meet at 1:30 p.m., at the church to attend a snow party on the Siskiyous. On Feb. 9. Miss Helene Harder, a missionary from Japan will speak at the church. The Couple's club has sched uled a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m., Friday at the church. The Valentine theme will be used. SERMON SUBJECT "Love" will be the sermon subject Sunday at First Church of Christ, scientist, 100 Windsor ave. The service is held at 11 a.m., and all are welcome to attend. Young people up to the age of 20 are invited to attend Sunday school. ' 150 persons here during the day. ; PICTURE TRANSMITTED Signals to ; transmit this picture from Hawaii to Chelt enham, Md., were bounced off the moon : in a test of a new Navy radio system which ruses the moon as a relay point to transmit ' messages and pictures nearly half-way ; around the world in a matter of seconds. The $5.5 million communications system, still largely in the experimental stage, was shown to newsmen for the first time yester da'y. (UPI Telephoto) Navy Uses Moon As Relay Radio Station : Washington-(UPD-The Navy has successfully used the moon to bounce radio signals to and from Hawaii by trans mitting a series of pictures ,and messages that included an order for this story. - United Press International .was covering the opening of the $5,500,000 moon relay communications system from both Washington and Hawaii. UPI Honolulu bureau man ager Charles Bernard sent this message to UPI reporter Dar rell Garwood in Washington: "Greetings from Hawaii via moon. Presume you handling story." It was the first time the UPI Washington man ever re ceived a request to write a atory over a distance of near ly a half-million miles - from earth to moon and back to earth again. Formal Demonstration A formal demonstration re peated the free exchange of personal messages late Thurs day at Pearl Harbor and at the Navy Communications Center at Cheltenham, Md., 35 miles southeast of Wash ington. ; Adm. Arleigh A. Burke, chief of naval operations and Adm. Herbert G. Hopwood, commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet, exchanged tele typewriter messages in which both expressed great pride in the new moon relay system. " The Navy then used all four of its moon channels to trans mit pictures, including a pic ture of the crew of the air craft carrier Hancock, stand ing in a formation spelling out "moon relay" on the ship's flight deck. Short-wave radio beams will not bend arouncft ,the curve of the earth to travel from here to Hawaii. But they will travel to the moon and bounce down to Hawaii. Annual Ground Hog Dinner Set Sunday The Medford Church" of the Brethren will hold their an nual ground hog dinner at the noon hour Sunday. In the morning worship the Rev. Escil Hiser, pastor, will give the third sermon in a series on personal Christian discipline, e n t it 1 e d, "And Christ Returned to Galilee." Miss Ruth Rittenhouse will present as a violin solo, "Sanctus." Following the worship the congregation will meet in the fellowship hall for dinner, a family activity sponsored by the Womens' Fellowship of the church. There is no charge but an offering will be taken to pay for the meat, and each family has been asked to take a pie. The School t of Missions study on Africa will continue in the group meetings at 6:30 p.m. In the worship service at 7:30 p.m. the congregation will view a color film strip entitled, "Nigeria Moves Ahead." It is the story of Brethren Mission work in North Eastern Nigeria where the church has tripled in membership in the last five years. The film will be the closing feature of the 1960 School of Missions. The church is located one block off Crater Lake ave. on the corner of Saling and Mary sts. "' ' St. Luke's to Give Meditation Sunday During the worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday at the St. Luke's Methodist church, the Rev. Melvin W. Dixon, min ister, will give a brief medi tation on the ministry. Methodist churches are ob serving the Sunday in mem ory of the denomination's re tired ministers. The Rev. L. G. Weaver, retired Methodist minister, will recite some of his original poetry, and Ar lene Wilson will sing a solo, composed by Mr. Weaver. Supervised nursery is con ducted for pre-school chil dren. The choir meets for re hearsal Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. The church school begins at 9:45 a.m. and there are class es for all ages. The Methodist Youth Fel lowship meets at 6:30 p.m. with Al Cole, counselor in charge. St. Luke's church is located at 2940 Siskiyou blvd. across the street from the Hoover; Elementary school. The public is invited to the services. The subject for the public talk Sunday at Kingdom hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2402 Jacksonville highway, will be "Will Many Now Living Nev er Die?"
