enham, Md., were bounced off the moon
: in a test of a new Navy radio system which
ruses the moon as a relay point to transmit
' messages and pictures nearly half-way
; around the world in a matter of seconds.
The $5.5 million communications system,
still largely in the experimental stage, was
shown to newsmen for the first time yester
da'y. This picture shows officers and men
of the USS Hancock spelling out "Moon

Navy Uses Moon As
Relay Radio Station
: Washington-(UPD-The Navy

to and from Hawaii by trans

,and messages that included
an order for this story.
- United Press International
.was covering the opening of
the $5,500,000 moon relay
communications system from
both Washington and Hawaii.
UPI Honolulu bureau man
ager Charles Bernard sent this
message to UPI reporter Dar
rell Garwood in Washington:
"Greetings from Hawaii via
moon. Presume you handling
story."
It was the first time the
UPI Washington man ever re
ceived a request to write a
atory over a distance of near
ly a half-million miles - from
earth to moon and back to
earth again.

ture of the crew of the air
craft carrier Hancock, stand
ing in a formation spelling
out "moon relay" on the
