Horse Trainer Says People Of U.S., Russia Similar Cleveland, Ohio -flJPD-Vladi- our country, the horse is ex- mir Ivanovich Fomin, a Rus sian horse trainer who just toured the United States, be lieves the only difference be tween Americans and Rus sians is the language they 6peak. "The workers in our coun tries are basically alike," he said. ''I found the American people extremely friendly in every city I visited." . Fomin took a Russian troika on a U.S. tour which gave him a chance to see more of this county than Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev did during his official visit. The 31-year-old trainer, an employee of the Soviet gov ernment, was sent here to train and exhibit a team of three white stallions pulling a one-ton metal carriage-given by Khrushchev to Cyrus Eaton, millionaire Cleveland indus trialist and financier. The gift was in recognition of Eaton's service to Soviet agriculture. Hit in Every Cily Fifteen thousands persons turned out in freezing weath er to see the first perform ance by Fomin and his team at Thistle Down race track here. The troika has been hit in every city in the United States and Canada where it was exhibited. "I could find nothing I dis liked in any of the cities I visited," Fomin said. "But was particularly impressed by the hospitality and scenic places in New York and Washington." The troika presents an ex ample of peculiar horseman ship. The three horses move at two different gaits, and at first glance appear to be going in three directions at once. The lead horse employs a trotting gait. The horses on either side canter with their heads turned out. The rig, a hangover from Czarist days in Russia, can reach a top 6peed of 30 miles per hour. Fomin liked America but he was anxious to get home, "I'll be glad to see my wife and two children at our home near Moscow," the short, stocky trainer said. "I don't like to be away from my family." He took time out during his tour to attend an American horse race. He said he found little difference between U.S and Soviet railbirds but the role of the pockey is less im portant in Russia. "Horse racing and betting are similar in our countries, but there is more general in terest in horses in Russia. In pected to perform without any extensive help from the jockey." The First National Bank of Oregon (Portland) Executor Van Dyke, Dellenback & McGoodwin Attorneys for Executor Seafon Lists Successes and Needs of Future Vashington-(Science Serv-ice-The U.S. will need its best thinking and planning in the years just ahead to meet the impact of population pressures on the nation's nat ural resources. Secretary of the Interior Fred A. Seaton said here recently. The past year's successes- ranging irom Dira conserva tion to bituminous coal min-ing-and the future years' needs were highlighted in the Jepartment's annual report. Some of the interior de partment's activities in fiscal i959 included: work on the construction of five saline and brackish water conversion demonstration plants; recla mation projects for water and electricity in arid western areas; planned urban and sub urban development; seeding and reforesting unproductive lands; exploring oil, gas, coal and nuclear fuel resources and conserving helium; and main taining and improving recrea tion resources. Turnover in Alaska The turn-over irom federal to state control of Alaska's fisheries and wildlife was one of four pieces of major legis lation affecting the depart ment's fish and wildlife serv ice in 1959. More funds for research on effects of pesti cide chemicals on fish and wildlife and for migratory bird refuges-through a dollar increase in the duck stamp price-were also made avail able. The Geological Survey, which celebrated its 80th an niversary in March, 1959, pre pared a total of 2,439 maps, of which more than 1,600 con stituted new mapping. New studies were directed toward the discovery of concealed ore deposits, while airborne radio activity and magnetic surveys provided new information about large areas of the U.S. New safety devices were developed for coal miners by the bureau of mines. "An ambitious study' was begun to " determine if hydraulic methods can be used to mine bituminous coal in the U.S. A fifth government helium plant neared completion. Im proved and more efficient mining and metallurgy tech niques were among the bu reau's 1959 achievements.
