Mayo CUale FIVE HUNDRED NEW PENICILLINS I read that at Syracuse, New York, scientists from several parts of the world re ported the re cent synthesis of more than 500 new types of penicillin. Nobelist Ernst B. Chain and others are hoping that some of these new drugs DR. ALVAREZ win De eiiec- tive against the now very troublesome penicillin - resist ant staphylococci. Perhaps some will be tolerated by pa tients who have become al lergic to ordinary penicillin, and perhaps some will com bat bacteria that never could be combated by ordinary penicillin. As Dr. E. P. Abraham has shown recently, at last chem ists are beginning to under stand how the several anti-bi-otics act to injur bacteria. Some damage the surround ing wall of the germ, while others interefere with the de velopment of the essential protein that lies within. It is fortunate for us that the anti biotics tend to damage grow ing bacteria much more than they tend to injure our body cells. CALIFORNIA AFTER CANCER QUACKS I see the California legisla ture has just passed a model anti-quackery law. The can cer quack s main complaint always has been that scien tists are too narrow-minded to, first, investigate his secret cancer cure, and then to give him the great credit and honor he thinks . he deserves. The only trouble with this is that when health authorities go to his office to see what his treatment is, how he is han dling patients, and what re sults he is getting, he becomes very secretive. Now, it will be the duty of a fine committee made up oi physicians, prominent citizens and experts from cancer re search laboratories, to go into the office of every cancer quack, to see what he is doing, and to analyze the drug he is using. He will have the chance which for so long he has been demanding, to prove to the world that he has the cure for cancer. If the committee finds that he is just a self -deluded, sim ple fellow, or, more probably, a swindler with an old crim inal record, and if they find that his patients are not get ting well, they can order him to stop practicing. If he con tinues, it will be up to the State's Attorney to prosecute him, and there are now some teeth in the law. My hunch is that the law will not be very successful, for two reasons: one, that we hu man beings love quacks; we believe in them and believe that, instinctively, they know something that learned scien tists never can learn. Two, some cancer swindlers take in so many thousands of dollars a week from the des perate relatives of dying pa tients that, when arrested, they can afford to employ some of the best legal talent in the state. Also, juries com monly sympathize with the quack; they think he is an underdog who is being perse cuted, and so they tend to set him free. Influenza Said on Rise in Oregon Portland - (UPD - The State Board of Health said Tuesday influenza is on the rise in Ore gon. The statement warned that an epidemic is pending. The department listed 1,429 reported cases of flu during the seven-day period ending last" Saturday, more than 50 per cent higher than the 810 cases reported a week ago.
