Bell, assist ant professor of forest man agement, who will be in charge, has announced. The two-day course has Jbeen scheduled to allow prac ticing foresters to learn abuut .the new cruising method that reduces errors and speeds ffield work. The new method, sometimes called wedge t cruising, was developed in j Europe and introduced into ; the United States. It has been ;field tested in both Douglas fir and pine timber types tduring the last three years Twith excellent results, Bell said. This is the sixth variable tplot cruising short course . conducted by the school of .forestry. Instructors for this -course will include Bell, J. R. Dilworth and J. T. Krygier of '. the forest management de partment; Norman T. Marsh, Salem, Oregon state tax com- mission; and Edwin Zaidlicz, "bureau of land management, ; Portland. i Bell is co-author of a bul letin, "Application of the : Variable Plot Method of J Sampling Forest Stand s," published by the Oregon state f board of forestry. Enrollment will be limited to 40, Bell reported, to assure individual instruction. Infor- Changes in Liability Insurance Are Noted Changes in liability and property damage insurance policies in connection with swimming pools, outboard motors and "midget" automo biles have been noted by lo cal insurance men. The changes are in conjunc tion with a National Rating Bureau ruling, based on in creasing numbers of hazards in connection with the three items, they said. Liability and property dam age policyholders who own swimming pools 30 inches or more deep, whether filled to the 30-inch level or not, must declare it in the policy, insur ance men said. The city fire department responded to 82 alarms in De cember, 1959, and the rural fire district responded to 10, according to the fire depart ment's monthly report. House fires accounted for the majority of the alarms in both districts, 43 reported to the city and six to the rural district. ' Firemen found flue fires at the greatest number of house fires reported. Of the 43 house fires in the city, 23 were flue fires, and of the six in the rural district, three were flues. The city fire department also responded to four busi ness occupancy fires. 10 trash fires and received five false alarms. The rural district had one sawmill fire, one trash fire and no false alarms. The fire marshal made 60 inspections in December, 29 of them in business occupan cies. He maae 7Z orders or recommendations for the re moval of fire hazards and 107 hazards were removed. A total of 239 fire permits were issued last month, ac cording to the report. I premium is charged at re newal, they added. . Outboard motors over 10 horsepower, or two or more motors whose cumulative horsepower exceeds 10 horse power, must be declared if they are used on a single craft so the policyholder will still have coverage. Charged on Motor . If the policyholder owns two motors, each of more than 10 horsepower, he is charged a premium on each motor.' If he owns two motors used in tandem on the same boat and the combined horse power exceeds 10 horsepower the premium is based on the combined horsepower, insur ance representatives said. If the policyholder uses a boat or motor belonging to someone else, he may be li able for damage to the boat and motor "in your care and custody," they added. Personal liability policies do not protect the policy holder who owns a "midget" automobile away from the premises. To have protection, the vehicle must be declared, and an additional premium will be charged for bodily in jury, property damage and medical payments coverage, the insurance men said. The restriction applies to all "midget" automobiles, which also are known as "kart," "go-Kart," or "speed- mobile," of the land motor vehicle type, whether home made or not. To have cover age off the premises such a vehicle must be specifically insured, they said. The first American turn pike, known as Little River Turnpike was authorized in Virginia in 1785.
