Thursday, Jan. 21, 1960 Germany Said Building Three Atomic Reactors Munich (Science Service) Two atomic reactors, one for research and the other for testing materials, are nearing completion at the Joint Atom ic Research establishment of the Land Northrhine - West phalia, Germany. A power reactor, order by a cooperative group of Ger man power suppliers, will be erected in the same research area. The two Research establish ment reactors are of the Brit ish Merlin and Dido types. They are expected to be in operation by the end of this year. 'Merlin and 'Dido "Merlin" is a water-moderated swimming pool reac tor, fueled by enriched uran ium. It has 14 irradiation channels. "Dido" is a heavy-water-moderated reactor, also fueled by enriched uranium. It will have 48 irradiation channels. Besides the two - reactors there will be nine scientific institutes on the research grounds, conducting research in such fields as chemistry, reactor development, nucle ar fusion, isotope separation, biology and medicine. The Joint Atomic Research estab lishment is located at Julich, half way between Cologne and Aachen. 'Parly Line' Will Hear Chest Sounds Minneapolis - The party line, to which rural tele phone subscribers once had exclusive claim, has been de veloped into a tool for medic al science. A stethoscope that will en able four doctors to listen in on a patient's chest sounds at the same time will soon be introduced by Miaco Electron ics Inc. The "Stethetron," with four headsets linked to one pickup, is transistorized to amplify heart and chest sounds 10, 000 times. Railroad Hearing Scheduled Feb. 8 Salem - (UPD - A hearing by the Oregon public utility com missioner on the application of Spokane, Portland and Se attle railroad to abandon its Vernonia agency has been set for Feb. 8 at Vernonia.
