The Medical by Living Beyond Your Heart Attack I recently read a helpful book on the care of the person who has had a heart attack, written in simple Eng lish by Dr. Eugene B. Mozes. It is "Living Be yond Ycur Heart Attack" (Prentice-Hall, N.Y.). As the author says, dr. alvakez many people get over a spell and live on for years; many go back to work; many can drink a little alcohol, but many will do well to stop heavy smoking; many who are fat should reduce; many should cut down in their diet animal fats, and take vegetable oils instead; many should take anticoagulants to keep from getting another at tack; many won't have any chest pains or shortness of breath; many should take some exercise like walking and many should avoid blow ing their top. Does Castration of Sexual Offenders Help? I recently read the best re port I have seen of legal cas tration with the idea of put ting a stop to sex offenses or calming down the behavior of highly promiscuous women who have an illegitimate child each year - a child the city has to bring up. The book is called "Asexualization," and is by Dr. Johan Bremer (Mac millan). He summarized a careful and detailed study of 244 men and women who were castrated with the hope that this operation would quiet them down. It appar ently calmed down some of -rm f I 37 ROGUE RIVER Dimes Chairman Speaks By MRS. It usually didn't calm down the promiscuous wom en, and it didn't improve the sanity of schizophrenics, psy- j chopathic delinquents and de generated epileptics. There is some sense to cas trating feeble - minded men and women who have an il legitimate and perhaps men tally retarded child every year. The only difficulty with this is that the brothers and sisters of the person with a defective brain easily can be carriers of the defect, and their children can also inherit it. As yet, there is not much chance of getting the brothers and sisters of a degenerate even to avoid having children. They certainly won't consent either to castration or what is harmless and much more logi cal - sterilization. We doctors have much trouble even in getting some hospital direct ors to permit a surgeon to tie a man's cords or a woman's tubes. When men refuse to permit this operation, in their community, I would like to ask them, will they dig down into their pockets to support the brood of unwanted, uncared-for and perhaps feeble minded children? Oh, no; that's for the taxpayers to do! Dr. Alvarez' booklet on cancer may be obtained by sending 25 cents and a large, stamped, self-addressed enve lope with your request to Dr. Walter C.
