Miss Lynne Smith Tell Engagement Of Lynne Smith, David McClurg Jr. Jacksonville - Mrs. Marie V. Smith, 503 Academy St., announces the engagement of her daughter, Lynne, to David McClurg Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. McClurg, Phoenix. Miss Smith is a senior at Medford High school and her fiance is stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., with the United States Army Reserve. No date has been set for their wedding. Couple to Marry In March Rites Camp White-Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Apparcel, Camp White, announce the engage ment of their daughter, Claire, to Monte Axtell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ranald Axtell, Trail. Their wedding is to take place March 12 in the Com munity church in Eagle Point. Miss Apparcel attended Grants Pass High school and Milo Academy, Canyonville. Her fiance was graduated from Eagle Point High school and is employed by Steve Wilson. ' Food Acreage Washington Two-fifths of America's tilled land produces 75 per cent of its food. ACS Committee Members Receive 1960 Assignments Members of the Medford committee of the American Cancer society received their 1960 assignments at the Janu ary meeting of the commit tee. Mrs. John S. Day, a dis trict commander of the ACS, heads the local group. Mrs. Day reminded the members of the three-pronged program against cancer- education, service, and research. Education is carried on through the use of public media, through film showings, and through the wide distribu tion of various pamphlets about cancer. Mrs. L. Scott Ellis will take charge of the educational literature, with Mrs. Russell Barnes, Mrs. B Brandt Bartels, and Mrs. Eu gene Meyerding to assist in its distribution. Mrs. Warren Bayliss will arrange programs using the numerous educa tional films about cancer. She is contacting organized groups in the valley to set dates for the presentation of this mate rial. Dr. Abner Clark is in charge of the films for the Jackson County unit of the American Cancer society, and he asks program chairmen to contact Mrs. Bayliss if they would like him to show some films to their organizations. Radio, television, and newspapers re ceive suitable material and current information from the national headquarters of the ACS. Local publicity is han dled by Mrs. Ray L. Caster line. Loan Closet As in previous years, Mrs. Ray Frisbie will head the service committee. She will be assisted by Mrs. Thomas Bolton and Mrs. Richard Schwann. Information about the loan closet that the com mittee maintains, and re quests for dressings or for available home services may be arranged by these commit tee members. Mrs. Casterline and Mrs. Schwann are representatives of the. committee at the Jack son County Unit board meet ings. - Mrs. Fred A. Lewis .will as sist Mrs. Mahr Reymers, ex ecutive secretary for the county unit, with the office organization. , Mrs. Fred Burich remains in charge of memorials. Mrs. Ralph Thompsen main tains the records of the Med ford committee, Mrs. Bartels serves as secretary, and Mrs Barnes and Mrs. Ralph Odell are responsible for contacting the members monthly. - Mrs. N. James Wilson and Mrs. Shcwahn will be co chairmen of the annual silver tea at Hillcrest. As yet, the date for this social event of spring has not been set. Other members of the Med ford Committee, who assist on several committees through out the year, are: Mrs. L. W. Bates, Mrs. Ivan Harrington, Mrs. Darrell Miller, Mrs. Fred Spiegelberg, Mrs. John Weisel. Woman Reelected Club President Gold Hill - Mrs. Gervas Southall was re-elected presi dent of the Gold Hill Garden club at the December session of the group held at the home of Mrs. William Fields. Mrs. Adrian Anderson was co hostess. Others elected at this time were Mrs. J. G. Kofahl, vice president, and Mrs. George Dorman, secretary-treasurer. Guests were Miss Barbara Brown, Sams Valley, Mrs. Clayton Fields, Mrs. Linabelle Deck, and Mrs. L. O. Chaplin all of Rogue River. Kir by, 29 Windsor avenue, and two sons, Bill, 11, and Jim my, 8, left Saturday by plane for the Virgin Islands where they will make their home on St. Thomas Island. Mr. Kirby, who was a divi sion officer here with the Ore gon Washington Telephone company, will be operations vice president of the Virgin Island Telephone corporation, a subsidiary of International Telephone and Telegraph. Mrs. Kirby was honor guest at a luncheon given Thursday afternoon by Mrs. Gene Cham berlain and Mrs. Richard Ack erman. After the buffet luncheon a gift was presented Mrs. Kirby.
