If your company needs copper as its basic raw material it's a great comfort to h'a v e your own copper mine right on the premises. R e a d i n g Tube Corp. needs copper for all its op erations, s o its aggressive president, hit upon the idea of building a copper "mine" above ground. His copper "mine" is a smelter and it uses scrap cop per for its operation. The re fining process removes all im purities from the scrap and leaves pure electrolytic cop per which is just what the company needs for its prod ucts. With this copper "mine" he was able to operate all through 1959 despite a cop per strike. His company can weather any contingency in copper mining. And that mine is just the ticket to make Reading Tube a com pletely integrated unit for the production of all kinds of cop- looks for a tight copper situ- SERMON SUBJECT "Sacrament" will be the sermon subject Sunday at First Church of Christ, Sci entist, 100 Windsor ave. Business Looking Up The year 1958 was a good one for building and the Reading Company thrived. Its sales ran to nearly SI 8. 5 million and its earnings reached SI. 16 a share, helped by a tax carry forward of $92,000. In 1959, the sales set a new all-time record high at $23 million, Mack estimates, and earnings rose to around $1.20 a share without a tax assist. Reading's tubes go into construction, refrigeration, air conditioning, oil refining. electrical, automotive, tele phone, power, metalworking, heating, and ventilating in dustries - but principally into construction. I960 Looks Good Mack looks for a big build ing year in 1960-perhaps a small letdown in the first half and then a pickup in the sec ond with the whole year around the record set in 1959. When Mack isn't busy in his shirt sleeves in his offices here, he can be found at his plants in Reading, Pa., or Pawtucket, R.I. While Mack no longer is in need of copper metal from outside sources, he keeps an eagle eye on the copper mar ket. Even after the strike situ ations are cleared up in the copper mining industry, he ft TAURUS - API?. 21 I MAY 21 F,f51-56-60-63l 71-77-79-801 STAR G-AXElC!) By the second half of 1960, copper supply should exceed demand with mines running around capacity, he says. He looks for some price shading in copper metal later in the year. Called Small Business Incidentally, Mack calls his operation small business. But it is growing into size where that description will not fit much longer. Its assets have more than doubled the $7.2 million' of 1954. In addition to completing its integration process and diversifying its products, Reading Tube has managed to price its product at a level whre it has recaptured mar kets that had been lost to foreign competition, Mack points out. ' With his ground floor cop per "mine" ready for capacity operations, and construction around record levels, Mack looks ahead to a big year in 1960 with his company mov ing higher and higher into the big business department.
