His copper "mine" is a

leaves pure electrolytic cop

company needs for its prod

was able to operate all

: President Mack, sitting be
hind his desk in the Empire
State Building, relates how
that refinery was built during
the recession and how it got
into production in June of
1958 as things were looking
up for industry generally.
Business Looking Up
The year 1958 was a good
one for building and the
Reading Company thrived.
Its sales ran to nearly SI 8. 5
million and its earnings
reached SI. 16 a share, helped
by a tax carry forward of
$92,000.
In 1959, the sales set a new
all-time record high at $23
million, Mack estimates, and
earnings rose to around $1.20
a share without a tax assist.
Reading's tubes go into
construction, refrigeration,
air conditioning, oil refining.

phone, power, metalworking,
heating, and ventilating in
dustries - but principally into
construction.
I960 Looks Good
Mack looks for a big build
ing year in 1960-perhaps a
small letdown in the first half
and then a pickup in the sec
ond with the whole year
around the record set in 1959.
When Mack isn't busy in
his shirt sleeves in his offices
here, he can be found at his
plants in Reading, Pa., or
Pawtucket, R.I.
While Mack no longer is
in need of copper metal from
outside sources, he keeps an
eagle eye on the copper mar
ket. Even after the strike situ
ations are cleared up in the
copper mining industry, he

ation for some time, since he
says it will take from 60 to
90 days after operations re
sume all around for deliveries
to catch up with demand.
By the second half of 1960,
copper supply should exceed
demand with mines running
around capacity, he says. He
looks for some price shading
in copper metal later in the
year.
Called Small Business
Incidentally, Mack calls his
operation small business. But
it is growing into size where
that description will not fit
much longer. Its assets have
more than doubled the $7.2
million' of 1954.
In addition to completing
its integration process and
diversifying its products,
Reading Tube has managed to
price its product at a level
whre it has recaptured mar
kets that had been lost to
foreign competition, Mack
points out. '
With his ground floor cop
per "mine" ready for capacity
operations, and construction
around record levels, Mack
looks ahead to a big year in
1960 with his company mov
ing higher and higher into the
big business department.

Year's First Rocket
Test Successful
Cape Canaveral, Fla.-fUHU
The Air Force started a new
year of American rocket tests
Wednesday night by firing an
inter-continental range Atlas
on an apparently successful
flight.
The 85-foot missile, carry
ing an "advanced design" nose
cone, left a brilliant display
of blue streamers as it passed
through layers of ionized gas.
Its target was near Ascension
Island about 5,000 miles t"
the southeast.
