The pro-am will.be held at the Fox Hills course and will have a full share of comedians including Bob Hope, Jack Benny, George Gobel and Phil Harris. The 72-hole open starts Fri day on the Rancho municipal course. Entries include the winners of virtually every major tournament during 1959. Race Betting Record Topped : New York-IUPD-Betting and attendance at the nation's Thoroughbred race tracks reached record highs in 1959, a United Press International survey showed today, with 30,922,431 persons betting $2, 392,379,486 during 3,515 rac ing days. Complete statistics from the 24 states with legalized gamb ling easily topped the previ ous records set in 1958 with 30,378,002 persons bet $2,274. 691,166. There were 3,274 racing days a year ago. Calif .-OJPD-Sixto Rodriguez of San Francisco retained his California light heavyweight title Tuesday night with a 12 -round de cision over Orlando Depietro - but he had to come off the floor to do it. Depietro drop ped Rodriguez in the second round with a smashing right to the jaw, but the San Fran cisco fighter came back strong and scored a knockdown in the eighth. The nation's gold mines produced only 1,736,352 ounc es in 1958, worth $60,800,000 a drop of 3 per cent from 1957. Braun Winner Over Old Buddy through the United Ptess International Carl Braun came out ahead of his old buddy Dick Mc Guire on two counts in their second meeting as rival coach es in the National Basketball association. Braun, ( named New York coach two weeks ago, person ally led his Knickerbockers to a 121-110 victory over the De troit Pistons, coached by Mc Guire, in the windup game of a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night. . Braun and McGuire, who took over as Detroit coach last week, played as team mates oil the Knicks from the 1949-30 season 1954-55 campaign. Wilt Chamberlain scored 52 points in leading the Phila delphia Warriors to a 126-111 victory over the Minneapolis Lakers in the opener of the twinbill, while the Syracuse Nats defeated the Boston Cel tics for the second time in three days, 145-143, at Provi dence, R.I., in other games. Riverside Phone SP 2-4239 T Royal Charges Syracuse With Name Calling Austin, Tex. - (UFD - Coach Darrell Royal of the Univer sity of Texas, angered over repeated charges that his team played dirty ' football and called a Syracuse player a "dirty nigger" in the Cotton Bowl game, countered Tues day that one of his own play ers was called names during the game. . . Royal said Syracuse won the game 23-14, retained its number one ranking and their coach, Ben Schwartzwalder, was named coach of the year. "Looks like they ought to be satisfied," Royal said. "I don't know what else they want." Royal was angered by re peated charged, aired once again Monday on a television show, that one of his players precipitated a racial incident. The Longhorn coach claim ed that Texas halfback Rene Ramirez had told him that Syracuse players had called Ramirez names during the New Year's Day contest. "So I guess it just depends you have to be from the South I guess to be prejudiced." Royal did not say what Ramirez was called. Coaches Seek Change of Rule On Substitution New York -(UPD- A recom mendation for the return of college football's unlimited substitution rule may produce an interesting battle between Midwest and Far West dele gates at next week's meeting of the National Collegiate Athletic association's rules committee. The nation's college coach es Tuesday petitioned the NCAA once again to restore two - platoon football, voting by an overwhelming 3 to 1 margin for free substitutions. However, Lou Little, chair man of the American Football Coaches association's rules committee, admitted the pro posal may be ignored again when the NCAA committee meets next week at Miami Beach, Fla. "What will happen this time I don't know," said the former Columbia University coach. "They've turned it down a number of times in the past. But the coaches want unlimited substitution and that's our recommenda tion." Little disclosed that the Big Ten Conference is push ing for a revival of the two platoon system over the ob jection of the West Coast Big Five. George Zaharius Married Again Las Vegas, Nev. - (UPD -George Zaharias, widower of female track and golf star Babe Didrickson, was married Tuesday to Betty Burgess of Los Angeles. Zaharias, a former wrest ler, listed his home as Tampa, Fla. Mrs. Burgess, 42, laid her previous marriage ended in divorce in 1949.
