Royal Charges
Syracuse With
Name Calling
Austin, Tex. - (UFD - Coach
Darrell Royal of the Univer
sity of Texas, angered over
repeated charges that his team
played dirty ' football and
called a Syracuse player a
"dirty nigger" in the Cotton
Bowl game, countered Tues
day that one of his own play
ers was called names during
the game. . .
Royal said Syracuse won
the game 23-14, retained its
number one ranking and their
coach, Ben Schwartzwalder,
was named coach of the year.
"Looks like they ought to
be satisfied," Royal said. "I
don't know what else they
want."
Royal was angered by re
peated charged, aired once
again Monday on a television
show, that one of his players
precipitated a racial incident.
The Longhorn coach claim
ed that Texas halfback Rene
Ramirez had told him that
Syracuse players had called
Ramirez names during the
New Year's Day contest.
"So I guess it just depends
you have to be from the South
I guess to be prejudiced."
Royal did not say what
Ramirez was called.
Coaches Seek
Change of Rule
On Substitution
New York -(UPD- A recom
mendation for the return of
college football's unlimited
substitution rule may produce
an interesting battle between
Midwest and Far West dele
gates at next week's meeting
of the National Collegiate
Athletic association's rules
committee.
The nation's college coach
es Tuesday petitioned the
NCAA once again to restore
two - platoon football, voting
by an overwhelming 3 to 1
margin for free substitutions.
However, Lou Little, chair
man of the American Football
Coaches association's rules
committee, admitted the pro
posal may be ignored again
when the NCAA committee
meets next week at Miami
Beach, Fla.
"What will happen this
time I don't know," said the
former Columbia University
coach. "They've turned it
down a number of times in
the past. But the coaches
want unlimited substitution
and that's our recommenda
tion." Little disclosed that the
Big Ten Conference is push
ing for a revival of the two
platoon system over the ob
jection of the West Coast Big
Five.
