WATSON Shady Cove Trail - "The Warning Shadow," a film con cerning lung cancer, was shown at a recent meeting of the Shady Cove Rotary club. Dr. Brian Stringer, Medford, answered questions from club members and later showed f'!ms on the fauna, flora and general terrain of New Zea land. Accompanying Dr. Stringer was H. H. Pringle, a Medford Rotary club member. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Conway, Shady Cove, spent the Christ inas holidays with their daugh ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Reedy, Talent. iting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lin den, Shady Cove. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R u f u s Trusty of Trail recently were their grandson, Billy Trustry, who has re-enlisted in the Navy and was home on. leave; two friends of his from the Air Force at Klamath Falls, and Stanley Shedds of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. James Wat- kins, Klamath fails, were overnight guests of Mrs. Wat- kins' brother and sister-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Saw yer, Shady Cove. Dr. and Mrs. Verne Wilson, Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bauer, Shady Cove, were dinner guests Christmas Eve at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bartuss, Shady Cove. Dinner guests at the Bartuss home Christmas were Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Wentjar and Mrs. Went jar's mother, Mrs. Josephine Lower, Med ford, and Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Schonberg, Camp White. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bergren, Shady Cove, were called to Leavenworth, Wash., to attend the funeral of Mr. Bergren's father. While in Washington, the Bergrens also visited Mrs. Bergren's mother, Mrs. Vivian McFarlane, who is hospitaliz ed at Wenatchee. Since return ing home they have had as week end visitors Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Sagaser, Brook ings, father and step-mother of Mrs. Bergren. At the recent meeting of the Shady Cove PTA a film was shown on cancer with Dr. Loeffler of Trail present to answer questions from the audience. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brophy, San Diego, were guests of Jack's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brophy, during his leave period from the Navy re cently. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hanson and family of Elk Creek, Trail, made a week end trip to Klamath Falls recently where they visited with Mrs. Hanson's sister and brother- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Childers. Dr. and Mrs. Harold Reith, Shady Cove, spent the Christ mas holidays with their daugh ter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Vic Westover, Bandon. The Westovers are leaving Bandon in January to move to Los Angeles where Dr. West over will have a 2-year resi dence in anesthesia at the White Memorial hospital there. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Oliver recently went to Wentworth, S. Dak., to visit their daugh ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Francis. The cou ple are the parents of a girl, their second child, born Dec. 1. The baby weighed over 8 pounds at birth and has been named Holly Marie. Paternal grandmother is Mrs. Dent Mc C a c k e n and great - grand mother is Mrs. Ann Miller. Maternal great grandmother is Mrs. Agnes B. Hyde. Seven NY Policemen Beaten New Year's New York - (UPD - Police to taled up the score Saturday and found at least seven pa trolmen had been beaten up in New York by New Year's celebrants. "I think that the trend to day is toward fighting cops," said Deputy Police Commis sioner Walter Arm. "People seem a little more inclined to tangle with us these ' days than they used to." Former President of the United States Warren G. Harding and his wife are en tombed in a white marble monument in Marion, Ohio. Artificial Lake Raleigh - Most of the lakes in western North Carolina are artificial. Largest is Fontana in the Great Smokies. Central Falls, which is one and one-third square miles in area, is Rhode Island's small est community. In 1950 23,000 people inhabited Central Falls, crowding 17,841 people a square mile. The December meeting of St. Martin's Episcopal Church Women was held at the home of Mrs. Ranald Axtell with 10 members present and also guests, . Mrs. Dorothy Tock stein. A flock of stray and un wanted geese have been mak ing a nuisance of themselves in the yard and on the lawn of the home of Dr. and Mrs. Harold Reith on the river in Edgewood Park. The geese try to eat all the food that the Reiths put out for the quail and other birds. They also wander over to the Reith's neighbors, the Phil Motschen bachers, and make themselves very much at home. If these geese belong to anyone, it would be appreciated if the owners would come and get them. Clarence Brumfield, Shady Cove, and Bill Massey, Trail, recently made a trip to Sacra mento, Calif., where they at tended the ceremonial of the Islam Shrine lodge. Mrs. Lulu Goodsman, Port land, recently spent 10 days visiting at the home of her brother and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Athel Dudley, Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Motschen bacher, Shady Cove, have had a great deal of company over the Christmas holidays. They have their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Evan Stewart and children, Clar ence, Lloyd and Adele of Nan ton, Alberta, Canada, spending two weeks' vacation with them. Also present for Christ mas were anotner son ana daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stewart, Grants Pass; a son, Merle Stewart, Klamath Falls and a granddaughter, Mrs. Gus Carlson and her daughters, Kim and Kathy of Talent. SWEEPSTAKES WINNER The Sweepstakes winner, top prize in the Rose parade in Pasadena, Calif., was a float entered by the City of Long Beach, Calif., entitled "Inter national Beauty-Venus De Milo," which is shown above passing along the parade route. The float emphasizes the annual beauty contest sponsored by the city.- -(UPI Telephoto) Ohioan Admits Killing Husband of Ex-Model The Elk-Trail 4-H Forestry Squirrels met recently at the home of Margaret and Leon ard Hanson. An exchange of Christmas gifts was held and the topic for roll call was "How and Where to Cut Christmas Trees." Five old members were present and eight new members, Morgan Miller, Tommy and Billy Law son, LaVonne Myers, Penny Fry, Connie Anderson and Mickey and Leonard Kale baugh. The next meeting will be held at the home of Billy and Tommy Lawson Jan. 13. The Bill Wilson family of Trail made a trip to Healds burg, Calif., recently where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Troy Whitehurst and other friends and relatives. The Vernon Copeland fam ily of Trail is visiting in Buena Park, Calif. Cpl. Ed Somerville, who is stationed in the Marine Corps at Barstow, Calif., is spending a few days visiting with his uncle, Claude Myers of Shady Cove. He had not seen his uncle since he was a little boy. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hanson and children of Trail spent the Christmas holidays visit ing Mrs. Hanson's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Childers, Klamath Falls. Other relatives also spending the holidays at the Childers home were Mr. and Mrs. Mor ris Bush, Elk Creek, Trail; Mr. and Mrs. Ken Lacey and son, Norris, and Mrs. Harry Nicholson, Central Point. Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Lacey, Mrs. Hanson and Mrs. Childers are sisters and Mrs. Nicholson is their mother. Painesville, Ohio - (UPD -Floyd E. Hargrove, 34, Satur day confessed he is the sniper who killed the husband of the woman he loves. Lake county authorities said Hargrove, who was "cleared" on Monday by a lie detector test then re-arrested Friday night, told them his desire to marry Lois Clark, 21, the widow of solid citizen Charles Clark, led him to the Christmas eve slaying. Purchased Rifle Frank D. Hathy, police chief in the Cleveland suburb of Mentor , where the Clarks lived, said Hargrove was re arrested Friday night because an anonymous tipster disclos ed the laundry truck driver had purchased a .22-caliber rifle in Chardon the day be fore the killing. The purchase was made un der an assumed name. Hathy said handwriting ex perts confirmed that the rifle purchase slip was signed in Hargrove's handwriting. The weapon was purchased Dec. 23, the day before a bul let fired from 40 feet away shot through the double win dows of the Clark's kitchen and struck the model father in the temple, killing him. - The slaying stirred the com munity and bared Mrs. Clark, a former Miami model, as a cheater who had had affairs with at least five men. Hargrove, in confessing Monday to Prosecutor Ed ward Ostrander said he knew conviction of the murder could send him to the electric chair. He confessed anyway "to spare the woman I love of all this scandal." Chessman, 5 Others In Prison Slugfesf San Quentin, Calif.-OJPD-A wild fight involoving convict author Carly Chessman and five other prisoners broke out Friday when the inmates in San Quentin's "death row" into their exercise area to watch the bowl games on tele vision. The 15-minute free-for-all was the first of two fights here Friday. The other, in volving two prisoners, sent one convict to the hospital with face cuts requiring 30 stitches. Bremerton Woman Dies in House Fire Bremerton (UPD - Mrs. Dor othy Abbott, 42, was killed early Saturday when fire de stroyed her home in nearby Navy Yard City. Cause of the fire, which broke out at 2 a.m., was un determined. Mrs. Abbott was alone in the house. Cities in Japan have swarms of captive balloons overhead.
