1 9 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Friday, Jan. 1, 1960 Family Council Sylvia T. - He doesn't talk to me anymore. Charles T. - Her babbling drives me crazy. Sylvia T. - My husband and I have been married five years and have two children. We get along pretty well, but we have one problem that is really driving me crazy. Charles was always "the quiet type." I guess I thought it was sort of cute when we were going together. He just seemed shy. But now he doesn't talk as much as he used to and he doesn't even answer me when I talk to him. All day I am left alone with the two kids and then when Charles comes home I hardly know he is there. He sits and reads the papers or watches TV and tells me I'm annoying him when I try to talk to him. Charles T. I know I'm not the talkative type, but I never pretended to be. I didn't sell Sylvia a bill of goods. I am the way I am. Sylvia thinks she's going crazy, but she doesn't know how she drives me crazy with that constant babbling. It starts the minute I get in the house and doesn't stop until she falls asleep - all nonsense about the neighbors, her fam ily, the kids, the delivery man, something she saw on the street. Sylvia says that if I loved her I'd talk to her, but I don't see what it has to do with love. I don't believe in talk ing for the sake of making a noise. She does. The Council: We doubt that any woman has ever gotten a man to talk by crying "You never talk to me any more!" If anything is calculated to shut a man up that phrase is. However a woman who must spend her entire day talking to children or to other women about household mat ters, needs and deserves the benefit of adult conversation with her husband in the eve ning. The husband, on the other hand, has probably spent the day in contact with others, has exchanged a few words with friends, acquaintances and co-workers, and looks for ward to an evening spent pas sively. He just doesn't want to make the effort of con versational interchange. If husbands and wives could imagine themselves in the other's position, they might be willing to make a greater ef fort to make things more pleasant for one another. Syl via is, in a sense, quite right when she feels that her hus band would talk to her if he loved her enough. Love is the incentive that makes us for get our selfish inclinations in the desire to understand and be of service to another. Charles should make an ef fort to talk to his wife of the day's happenings, even if it hurts at first. If he listens attentively and tries to make a contribution to the conver sation he may find that there is much that isn't trivial in what his wife has to say. Sylvia should make conver sation more fun by avoiding the whining complaining kind of talk and trying to find in teresting or amusing anec dotes to relate. She should also try to keep herself in formed so that she can talk to her husband about some of his favorite subjects. And the couple should entertain or go out together as often as pos sible to bring variety and more interest into their life. (Copyright 1959. General Features Corp.)
