Friday, Dm. 25, 1159 School Receives Two Buses With Trading Stamps Provo, Utah (UPD The St Francis Catholic school her ia using two new buses that it got by collecting trading stamps-7,708,800 of them. "It was aomewhat unusu al," admitted an official of tii Sperry and Hutchinson Co. The marathon stamp trade in was engineered by Father Colman Colloty, O.F.M., prin cipal of the school, after a front wheel fell off one of the school's old buses. He wrote the trading stamp company asking how many stamps for something that wasn't in the catalog - the buses. The company wasn't quite sure, but it told Father Oolloty to start collecting anyway. Then it decided that 6,424 books was iust about the right stamp price. Figur Arbitrary Officials admitted the fig ure was somewhat arbitrary. In a sixth-month campaign, the parish sent letters to the 8,000 Catholic schools in the nation saying "we don't want your money - we just want your trading stamps." The $700 bill for postage stamps was paid by men in the par ish. The rsult was a flood of the green stamps. "We even received stamps issued as far back as 1912," Father Colloty said, "but the company redeemed them along with the others. "We have gotten as much pleasure out of this inspiring project as you have," said Earl N. Keate, Utah manager for the company, as he pre sented the buses-and collect ed his 7,708,800 stamps. Ring Found After 40 Years Los Angeles. Calif.-A Lot Angejes housewife is proudly wearing an unexpected gift her wedding ring-which had been missing for 40 years. Mrs. George Davis lost the gold band In 1919 when her little daughter took it ou side to play. She always hoped to find the ring and avoided replac ing it. Later, the Davis fam ily moved away. Eight years ago the ring was dug up by William An derson, the new occupant of the old Davis home. He put it in the cupboard. Recently his wife showed it to a friend. The friend cleaned away years of dirt and managed to make out the inscription "G. L. Davis." Then a check of the phone book turned up the new address of th Davis family. Old Railroad Slang A Thing of Past Chicago, 111. - The bake head's banjo is empty, th hay burner is doused, th gandy dance is finished. This rich railroad slang, describing the jobs and tools of the track, has become only history since World War II. They were pushed into th background by the $15 mil lion modernization of the American Railroads. The "gandy dancer," who swayed rhythmically as he tamped the boiler, has been replaced by the $48,000 auto matic tamper of a diesel en gine. Gone, too, is the bakehead, tallowpot, smokey, fireboy and clinkerboy-retired by the diesel. Even the section gang is a thing of the past. Now 22 ma chine operators do the work of 250 laborers, in th "new look" of railroads. Cold Weather Faced To Treat Sunburn Tower, Minn.-Police, sum moned in 12 degree weather, rushed Jack Fehl, 35, to th hospital for treatment of sun burn. Hospital attendants said he suffered an inflammation of the eyes and superficial burns of his chest and back. - Fehl explained that he had been reading under a sun lamp and became, so en grossed he lost track of time. Mother's Little Helper Didn't Help New York, N.Y. - Little Mike Greenberg wanted to help his mother with the washing so he got a bucket of water - and splashed it over some clothes. There was only one hitch. His mother, Mrs. Meyer Greenberg, had just finished ironing the clothes and had them ready to put away.
