As he moves to Paris and a meeting of the Western sum' mit, peace still will be his theme. But this time it must be applied to the United States' West European " Allies whose unity is threatened as it' probably has been at no time since the end of World War II, It was a flower-strewn- path Matthews Elected Safely Council Ralph Matthews, s'uperin- tendent of transportation, Medford public schools, was elected president of the Med ford Safety council Friday at a meeting at the Rogue Val ley Country club. Give Cozy, Luxurious Warmth with a WESTINGHOUSE that Eisenhower trod ' last week. Hfe carried only one message his own and the United States' desire and de- Greater Unity Seen for Oregon Democrat Party Salem - (DPD - State Demo cratic Chairman - Robert Straub of Eugene said Satur day night he sensed "new ex citement" and a feeling of greater unity in the party. Straub, who was honored at a dinner here, said a basic problem facing the Demo cratic State Central Commit tee was lack of funds. He said the party would need $50,000 before the 1960 general elec tion. Critical of Hatfield Straub also was critical of Gov. Mark Hatfield for what he termed the "woeful lack of leadership." Democrats earlier Saturday voted to oppose a sales tax in any form. A similar resolu tion was passed by the Central Committee last April. They also voted to suggest to the state delegation to the nation al convention that the person who gets the highest number of votes be automatically named acting chairman. The suggestion went on to say that the acting chairman call dele gates together within three weeks to name a permanent delegation chairman. Wail Street Chatter , New York OJPB Expect no easing in the current credit stringency as long as the gen eral business boom is still in process, says the Value Line investment survey. Moreover, it points out, be cause of the usual six-to-eight month lag between money market changes and their im pact upon home building, any action to increase the availability of mortgage funds would probably have little effect on housing activity be fore the1 end of next year at the earliest." An early display of wisdom from the disappointing ex perience of 1959 should mean a favorable ' atmosphere for oil shares in 1960, Oil Statis tics Co., tells its readers. "Meanwhile, we are optimis tic that many leading oils will continue to join in the tradi tional December-January bull market." Reynolds & Co. notes that American Steel Foundries shares ' continue to represent an attractive investment situa tion, embracing interesting long-term capital gain possi bilities, in addition to worth while income return. OIL OFFICER DIES Elizabeth, N. J. -UPD- James J. Mooney, 45, head of marine service for the Esso Standard Oil Refinery at Bayonne, N. J., died Sunday of injuries suffer ed in an auto accident Dec. 4. Monday, Dee. 14, 1959 termination for world peace, Governments from Rome, through Ankara, Karachi, Ka bul and New Delhi might have preferred a firmer line from the touring President of the United States, a definition in terms of dollars, military aid and binding agreements. Adorations Mount But whatever the leaders might have desired, there was no denying the response of millions whose adorations mounted in direct proportion to their poverty and fears. For example, New Delhi . . . - "Food family friend ship . . . and freedom," he told them, are mightier weapons for peace than all the armies and bombs. The gigantic throng's' roar of approval was proof of the responsive chord he struck. ' This was the Eisenhower formula. . This was how he projected his image upon millions of Asians as a man dedicated to pulling the world out of a morass of fear, bitterness and suspicion. It drew from the ' usually reserved Prime Minister Ja waharlal Nehru: "You have found an echo in the hearts of our millions and I hope and believe your coming here will be a blessing to us and a blessing to all." To Meet Khrushchev And it was on this basis that Eisenhower intended to meet Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev a self - appointed but no longer generally ac cepted spokesman" for the backward nations and the have-nots. " This was the first phase of the 11-nation Eisenhower tour which would extend on through Tehran and Athens, and wind up finally in Paris. Its success as a psychologi cal weapon against expanding communism certainly . could not have been anticipated dur ing the planning stages in Washington. S. cruiser Des Moines and heads west ward across the Mediterran ean, he leaves the orbit of the little man and heads into a far more uncertain one. In Paris, he meets with President Charles " de Gaulle of France and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan of Great Britain in a conference wide ly heralded as a prelude to a meeting at the summit with Khrushchev in the spring. Here the man who won the hearts of Asian millions as a champion of peace must call forth all his noted talents to heal a dangerously widening breach. It is a conflict of person alities and national interests which have allowed the 'North Atlantic Treaty Alliance to weaken as fear of aggressive communism has declir ed. Storm center is de Gaulle. Singles Out France ' - U. S. Chief of Staff Gen. Nathan F. Twining put the finger squarely on France last week as the core of mounting NATO weakness. in London, mounting an noyance with de Gaulle led one influential newspaper to suggest it is time for Britain to pull out of NATO alto gether and to fall back upon its commonwealth and U. S. ties. " . NATO headquarters itself has said that only West Ger man troops now provide NATO's first line defenses in the West, that others could not be relied upon and that failure to meet commitments soon will, if it already has not, leave NATO incapable of ful filling its role in case of at tack. Of all the NATO nations who agreed in principle to the establishment of U. S. atomic capable missile bases on their soil, the only ones to do so are Britain, Italy and Turkey.
